Data sources and licences
Last updated: 1 November 2026
Every embassy, consulate and visa rule on this site comes from open data. This page credits each source and its licence.
OpenStreetMap
Most missions, their positions, addresses and many opening hours come from OpenStreetMap (objects tagged office=diplomatic). Data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL 1.0). Each record links back to the original object, where anyone can correct it.
Wikidata
Websites, phone numbers, founding years and further missions come from Wikidata, whose data is in the public domain (CC0 1.0).
German Federal Foreign Office
Contact details, heads of mission and notes for German missions abroad and for foreign missions in Germany come from the open data interface of the Auswärtiges Amt. Its notes are shown in the original German.
Official diplomatic lists
Where a government publishes the list of the embassies and consulates in its country, that list is matched to the missions above and wins over OpenStreetMap and Wikidata for the address, phone, e-mail, website and head of mission; missions it lists that nobody had mapped are added at their town. Each mission page names the lists its record uses. The lists we read:
London Diplomatic List, consular offices and honorary consulates (FCDO Protocol): contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. · Diplomatic List of the Department of Foreign Affairs (Ireland) (CC BY 4.0). · Représentations étrangères en France (Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères, Licence Ouverte / Etalab 2.0). · Coordonnées du corps diplomatique et consulaire (FPS Foreign Affairs, Belgium; free re-use with attribution).
Foreign Representatives in Canada (Global Affairs Canada): contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada. · Foreign Embassies and Consulates in Australia (© Commonwealth of Australia, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, CC BY 4.0). · Embassies (New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, CC BY 4.0), also for New Zealand’s own missions abroad. · Diplomatic Missions (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Diplomatic Portal). · Verzeichnis der offiziellen Vertretungen der Schweiz im Ausland (Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, free re-use with source), for Switzerland’s own missions. · Foreign Missions in TRNC (KKTC Dışişleri Bakanlığı, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus; government publication, contact details reused with attribution).
Governments’ own lists of their missions abroad
Many foreign ministries publish the list of their own embassies, high commissions, consulates general and consulates around the world. We use each list for that country’s missions only: for them it wins for the address, phone, e-mail, website and head of mission, and posts it lists that were missing are added at their town (the map position is then approximate). Contact details are taken as published, with the source credited; we read each site slowly and follow its robots.txt. The lists:

Visa rules
Entry requirements for every passport come from the Passport Index dataset (imorte/passport-index-data, MIT licence; earlier versions by Ilya Ilyankou), compiled from the publicly available Passport Index. Each visa page shows the date of the data. Entry rules for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which the Passport Index dataset does not cover, come from the visa page of the Immigration Department (Muhaceret Dairesi) of the Ministry of the Interior of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
GeoNames
Names of towns and cities in every language, and country facts such as capitals, population, currency and calling codes, come from GeoNames, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0).
Public holidays
Nationwide public holidays, shown as days on which missions are usually closed, come from Nager.Date (MIT licence). Regional holidays are not included.
Travel advisories
Advisory levels are summarised from the governments that publish them: the US Department of State (public domain), the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office via GOV.UK (Open Government Licence v3.0) and the German Federal Foreign Office (open data). We show only the level; always read the full advice on the official page.
Visa statistics
Mission, country and visa pages show official visa statistics where the publishing government releases them. We take the figures as published, add them up by consulate, country and year, and compute only rates and changes from them; nothing is estimated.
Schengen visas. Visa statistics for consulates, European Commission, Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, one workbook per calendar year (we use the three latest years). © European Union; reuse is authorised under the Commission’s reuse policy (Decision 2011/833/EU), which applies the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (CC BY 4.0) by default. Figures cover short-stay (type C) visas: applications, visas issued (including multiple-entry visas), visas with limited territorial validity, and visas not issued. The refusal rate is the Commission’s “not issued rate”: visas not issued divided by all decisions. Figures are per consulate and include every nationality applying there; Bulgaria and Romania only issued Schengen visas from 31 March 2024. Airport transit visas and national (type D) visas are not included.
US visas. Visa statistics of the US Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs: monthly nonimmigrant visa issuances by post and by nationality, and the yearly adjusted refusal rates for B (visitor) visas by nationality. Works of the US government are in the public domain. Fiscal years run from October to September; a year still in progress is compared with the same months a year earlier. The State Department does not publish refusals per post, so US mission pages show issuances only.
Matching: each consulate in the statistics is linked to the mission of the same country in the same town on this site. Where we have no record of that mission, its figures still count in the country totals. Interview wait times are not shown: the State Department’s wait-time tool cannot be read automatically, so please check it on travel.state.gov.
Map and design
