How this guide is made
What this directory covers
The directory lists 17,501 diplomatic missions in 226 countries, spread over 1,540 towns and cities. An embassy represents its country in the host state’s capital, consulates do consular work in other cities, and honorary consuls give limited, part-time help.
How to find a mission
Start from the country you are in, or will travel to, to see every foreign embassy and consulate there, city by city; from there, open one country’s missions, for example your own country’s embassy and consulates.
For travel, choose your passport: for each of 199 passports the visa section shows which destinations are visa-free, which issue a visa on arrival or online, and where a visa is needed in advance.
Where the data comes from
Mission locations and details are compiled from OpenStreetMap, Wikidata and the open data of the German Foreign Office, with towns from GeoNames and public holidays from Nager.Date. Visa rules come from an open passport index dataset, and travel advice from the US State Department, the UK FCDO and the German Foreign Office.
The capitals with the most missions are Brussels (255), Paris (226), Rome (225), London (218) and Washington D.C. (193).
By the number of destinations open without a prior visa, the strongest passports are those of the United Arab Emirates (170), South Korea (164), Singapore (164), Japan (163) and Spain (162).
We compile every mission from open data (OpenStreetMap, Wikidata) and from the lists that foreign ministries publish, merge duplicates, and recalculate opening status in each mission’s own time zone. We sell no visas and take no fees.
