Latvia belongs to the European Union and the Schengen area. Of the 198 passports in the visa data, 93 can enter visa-free and 105 need a visa from an embassy or consulate for Latvia. As a Schengen state, Latvia counts every short stay towards the shared limit of 90 days in any 180.

In fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 to September 2025) the United States issued 2,213 nonimmigrant visas to citizens of Latvia, the 139th highest number of the 206 nationalities listed. Transit and crew visas (C and D) made up 26%, visitor visas 22% and diplomatic and official visas 18%. That is 23% fewer than in fiscal year 2024 (2,858).

From October 2025 to February 2026, citizens of Latvia received 656, 9% fewer than in the same months a year earlier.

For visitor visas (B1/B2) the State Department reports an adjusted refusal rate of 19.0% for citizens of Latvia in fiscal year 2025 (fiscal year 2024: 7.7%).

In the other direction, Latvia runs 87 missions in 42 countries. Its largest networks are in Germany (10), France (10), Australia (7), Belgium (5) and the United Kingdom (4).

All 42 embassies are in the capital, Riga. Belarus has the most missions in Latvia, 2, followed by Russia (2) and Ukraine (2).
