Nepal transit visa
Transit Visa (up to 24 hours)
In short
A foreigner passing through Nepal can obtain a Transit Visa at Tribhuvan International Airport to enter the country for up to 24 hours. It costs USD 5 and requires proof of onward travel, usually the air ticket. Anyone who needs more than 24 hours, or who arrives because of an emergency or forced landing and wants to leave the airport, takes a Tourist Visa instead.

When a transit visa is the right choice
The Transit Visa is meant for foreigners who are passing through Nepal and want to leave the airport for a short stop, for example to rest overnight before a connecting flight. It allows a stay of no more than 24 hours. Indian citizens do not need it, as they need no visa for Nepal at all. For any stay longer than a day, the 15-day Tourist Visa at USD 30 is the shortest alternative, and it allows multiple entries.
Emergency landings and unplanned arrivals
Passengers who arrive in Nepal because of an emergency or a forced landing are not limited to the transit visa: if they want to leave the airport and visit the country, they can obtain a Tourist Visa under the normal rules and fees. Nationals of countries excluded from the visa on arrival should check with a Nepalese mission before planning a stopover.
How it is issued at Kathmandu airport
Fill in the online visa application and select the Transit category. After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, pay the USD 5 fee at the bank counter and go to the Transit Visa desk with your passport, the receipt and your onward air ticket as proof of transit. The immigration officer then issues the visa.
- Complete the online visa application and choose Transit.
- After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, pay USD 5 at the bank counter.
- Go to the Transit Visa desk with passport, receipt and onward ticket.
- Leave Nepal within 24 hours of entry.
Leaving on time
The visa expires 24 hours after entry. If your onward flight is delayed beyond that window, speak to the immigration authorities, since staying past the permitted time counts as overstaying, which the Department fines at USD 5 per day for tourist visas.
