Who can apply
The Marriage Visa is a non-tourist visa for foreigners married to a citizen of Nepal. The marriage must be documented by a marriage certificate from the District Administration Office or a court and registered at the local level, and the Nepali spouse's citizenship certificate is required. The visa is issued only by the Department of Immigration in Nepal; spouses usually enter on a Tourist Visa and then apply for the change of category.
Duration and fees
On a first application the Marriage Visa is granted for up to six months. After that it is issued for up to one year at a time. The fee is USD 15 a month, with USD 20 extra for a single re-entry facility and USD 60 for multiple re-entry. The fee table also refers to cases that are free of charge under the Foreign Relations Regulation 2032 without describing them, so ask the Department whether they apply to you.
The Nepali spouse must be present
Each time the foreign spouse applies, the Nepali husband or wife must come to the Department in person to confirm the relationship, and the original documents with photocopies must be brought again, even if they were submitted the year before. If the Nepali spouse has died or cannot appear, the Department can issue a non-tourist visa on the identification of a parent-in-law, an adult son or daughter, or a brother-in-law, together with a relationship certificate from the local body and the marriage registration.
