Nepal business visa for investors

Business Visa (for foreign investors and businesspersons)

In short

Nepal's Business Visa is not a short business-trip visa: it is a non-tourist visa for foreigners who have invested in or run a business in Nepal under foreign investment approval. The Department of Immigration issues it for one month to one year or for five years at a time, always with multiple re-entry, and the fee falls as the investment grows.

Who qualifies

The visa is intended for investors and businesspersons who invest or carry on business in Nepal. In practice the application rests on the foreign investment approval issued by the Department of Industry: you need its recommendation letter, the Foreign Investment Acceptance letter, the company's registration, PAN or VAT and industry registration certificates and, for investments above NRs 10 million, the share certificate. People who only need to attend meetings or explore the market usually travel on a Tourist Visa, since entry points issue no other category.

Fees by size of investment

The Department's fee table, which states that all applications go through NepaliPort, sets three bands. For investments of up to NRs 100 million the visa costs USD 35 a month, USD 400 a year or USD 1,000 for five years. Above NRs 100 million it costs USD 20 a month, USD 200 a year or USD 500 for five years. Investments of NRs 1,000 million or more are exempt. An older summary on the Department's visa information page uses different bands (USD 30, 300 or 1,000 below NRs 10 million), so ask the Department which table applies to you.

Issue and renewal

First-time applicants submit a bio-data sheet with the Department of Industry recommendation and company documents, and regular renewals require the latest tax clearance, the industry monitoring and supervision report and a progress report of the company. Unlike other non-tourist visas, the Business Visa always includes multiple re-entry, so no separate re-entry fee is charged.

  1. Obtain foreign investment approval and the Foreign Investment Acceptance letter from the Department of Industry.
  2. Register the company and obtain the PAN/VAT and industry registration certificates.
  3. Request the Department of Industry's recommendation for a Business Visa.
  4. Submit the online application on NepaliPort and choose one month to one year or five years.
  5. Present the documents at the Department of Immigration and pay the fee for your investment band.

From Business Visa to Residential Visa

An investor who has put at least USD 100,000 or the equivalent into an industrial enterprise in Nepal can apply for the Residential Visa in the investor category, which is issued after approval by the Ministry of Home Affairs and renewed yearly.
