Who needs a Nepal tourist visa
All foreigners except Indian citizens need a visa to enter Nepal, and for visits the Tourist Visa is the only category on offer. The Department of Immigration issues it at entry points, through its ETA portal and through Nepalese missions. A few groups receive it free of charge: children under 10 for up to 30 days (US citizens excluded), citizens of SAARC countries for up to 30 days on their first visit in a visa year, Chinese nationals for up to 150 days a year, and holders of a Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) card. Even a free visa requires the online application form.
Fees for the first visa and for extensions
The entry fee depends on the period you choose: USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days. Every tourist visa issued at an entry point already includes multiple entry. Extensions cost USD 3 per day with a minimum of 15 days, so the smallest extension is USD 45, and adding a multiple re-entry facility to an extended visa costs another USD 25. A late fine of USD 5 per day applies if you stay past the visa's end date.
Fees are not refunded and a visa cannot be withdrawn once it has been issued, so pick the period carefully before paying.
Trekking permits and staying within the visa's purpose
A tourist visa does not by itself open restricted trekking areas. Permits for those areas are issued by the Department of Immigration only through registered trekking agencies, and individual or solo permits are not granted there. Keep the passport and permit with you during the trek and do not leave the route stated in the permit. The Department also reminds foreigners that they may only carry out the activities their visa was issued for; paid work on a tourist visa is not allowed.
Extending your stay up to 150 days
Tourist visas are extended by the Department of Immigration at Kalikasthan in Kathmandu, by the Immigration Office in Pokhara and by other immigration offices; the Pokhara office extends visas but does not issue them on arrival. Bring your passport and a recent passport-size photo, or start the extension online on NepaliPort. The combined total of the first visa and all extensions may not exceed 150 days between 1 January and 31 December. A new visa year starts on 1 January, so a stay that spans two calendar years is counted separately in each.
