Who needs it

The Transit Visa is for travellers who stop in Myanmar on the way to another country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists it at USD 20 with a permitted stay of 24 hours, and it is not among the categories that can be extended. For any longer stopover a tourist visa or the Tourist eVisa is needed.

Transit visa on arrival

The Ministry’s on-arrival rules allow passport holders of a listed group of countries, including the EU states, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, India, Japan and Russia, to obtain a Transit Visa at Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw international airport. They need a passport valid for six months from entry, two recent 4 x 6 cm colour photos and an air ticket to the destination, and they apply at the airport immigration section with the form available from airlines or the Ministry of Immigration and Population. Other nationals obtain the visa from an embassy before travelling.

Applying at an embassy

Only the Tourist and Business visas can be obtained online; every other category is issued by a Myanmar embassy or consulate. The official eVisa portal has a directory of Myanmar embassies and consulates abroad: contact the mission that covers your country of residence and ask it for the current application form, document list and fee before you apply.

  1. Check whether your stopover fits within 24 hours; otherwise use a tourist visa or the Tourist eVisa.
  2. If your nationality is not on the on-arrival list, contact the Myanmar embassy or consulate that covers your country of residence.
  3. Submit the form, passport, photos and onward ticket and pay USD 20.
  4. Leave Myanmar within 24 hours of arrival.

Rules during transit

A traveller refused entry on arrival is returned to the country of departure through the airline, and decisions of the on-arrival scrutiny team are final. Visa holders may not work, may not enter restricted areas without permission and must stay at licensed accommodation.
