What the Social Visa covers
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the Social Visa among the regular visa categories issued by Myanmar missions, alongside the tourist, business, religious, employment and education visas. It is the category for social visits, such as staying with relatives in Myanmar. Neither the Tourist eVisa nor the Business eVisa can be converted into a Social Visa after arrival.
Fees and length of stay
A single-entry Social Visa costs USD 50 and allows a stay of 70 days, which can be extended under the applicable rules. The multiple-entry Social Visa costs USD 150 for three months of validity, USD 300 for six months and USD 450 for one year; it allows multiple entries and stays, can be extended under the rules and does not require the holder to leave after 70 days.
Where to apply
Only the Tourist and Business visas can be obtained online; every other category is issued by a Myanmar embassy or consulate. The official eVisa portal has a directory of Myanmar embassies and consulates abroad: contact the mission that covers your country of residence and ask it for the current application form, document list and fee before you apply.
- Decide between a single-entry visa (70 days) and a multiple-entry visa valid 3, 6 or 12 months.
- Identify the Myanmar embassy or consulate that covers your country of residence, using the directory on the eVisa portal.
- Request that mission’s current form and document list and submit the application with the fee.
- Enter Myanmar, stay at a licensed or legally permitted address and report it to the township immigration office.
During the stay
Some parts of Myanmar are restricted areas, and foreigners need prior permission to travel there. Accommodation must be at licensed hotels, motels and guest houses or at legally permitted premises, and the address of the stay is reported to the township immigration office.
