How visas for Myanmar work

Most foreigners need a visa for Myanmar. The Ministry of Immigration and Population (MOIP) runs the official eVisa system at evisa.moip.gov.mm, which issues two categories online: the Tourist eVisa (USD 50, 28-day stay) for nationals of 100 countries and the Business eVisa (USD 70, 70-day stay) for nationals of 54 countries. Other categories, such as the religious visa for meditation stays, are issued by Myanmar embassies and consulates.

An approved eVisa is an approval letter, valid for 90 days from issue, that is printed and shown at one of four entry points: Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw international airports or the Kawthaung land border checkpoint. The visa itself is stamped into the passport on arrival. Every eVisa is single-entry and the processing fee is never refunded.

The Business eVisa is open to a shorter list of 54 countries; nationals not on it apply at a Myanmar embassy or consulate, whose addresses are listed in the directory on the eVisa portal. Business visa holders already in Myanmar can extend their stay online through the eStay system for 3, 6 or 12 months.

Which visa do I need?

Sightseeing or a holiday of up to 28 days, entering through Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw or Kawthaung: Tourist eVisa. Arriving by cruise ship: a pre-arranged visa on arrival through your tour operator, because the eVisa is not valid at seaports.

Business on behalf of a company registered in Myanmar: Business eVisa if your nationality is on the list of 54, otherwise a business visa from a Myanmar embassy or consulate. Meditation retreats: a religious visa from an embassy or consulate.

Visiting family or friends: Social Visa from an embassy (USD 50 single entry for 70 days). Passing through within 24 hours: Transit Visa (USD 20). Taking up a job: Employment Visa. Studying: Education Visa (USD 50 for 90 days or USD 160 multiple entry for a year).
