Who can get a Tourist eVisa

The Tourist eVisa is open to ordinary passport holders of 100 countries, from Albania to Vietnam, as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. The full list is on the official eVisa portal; nationals not on it apply for a tourist visa at a Myanmar embassy or consulate.

Some neighbours do not need a visa for short tourist stays when entering and leaving through Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw airports: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines and Thailand for 14 days and Vietnam for 30 days. Singaporeans have 30 days visa-free through all international checkpoints.

Requirements

Your passport needs at least six months of validity. You upload a colour photo of 4.6 x 3.8 cm taken within the past three months and the passport bio-data page, attach proof of a return ticket out of Myanmar and proof of a hotel booking, and pay by Visa, MasterCard or JCB card. Travellers entering at Kawthaung attach a trip plan instead of a return ticket, and those staying on a boat can show the boat booking.

Tourists must stay in registered accommodation: hotels, motels, inns, guest houses, resorts or registered boats.

Embassy-issued tourist visa

Travellers who do not use the eVisa can obtain a tourist visa from a Myanmar embassy or consulate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the embassy-issued tourist visa at USD 40 for a stay of 28 days. The eVisa portal's directory lists the Myanmar missions abroad.

  1. Book a return ticket and registered accommodation, and plan to enter through one of the four eVisa ports.
  2. Register on evisa.moip.gov.mm and choose Tourist Visa under New Application.
  3. Upload the photo, passport page, ticket and hotel booking; add any child under seven on your passport.
  4. Pay USD 50 by card; the acknowledgement e-mail starts the processing time.
  5. Download and print the approval letter after at least three working days.
  6. Enter within 90 days and leave Myanmar before your 28 days end.

Entering and travelling in Myanmar

Enter through Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw international airport or the Kawthaung land border checkpoint within 90 days of the approval letter's issue, and present a printed copy. The 28 days run from the date of arrival. Seaports do not accept the eVisa: cruise passengers arrange a visa on arrival in advance through their tour agent.

Some parts of the country are restricted areas for foreigners and tourists, and travelling there requires prior permission. The Ministry of Immigration and Population and the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism publish the details.

Extension and re-entry

The Tourist eVisa cannot be extended, and it cannot be converted into a business or social visa. It is valid for one entry only: if you leave Myanmar for a side trip, you need a new eVisa to come back.

Travelling with children

A child under seven who is listed in a parent's passport is entered in the Children Information section of the parent's application. A child with an own passport, whatever the age, needs a separate application and fee.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Myanmar?

Yes, unless your nationality is on Myanmar's visa exemption list. Ordinary passport holders of the 100 countries on the Tourist eVisa list can apply online; others apply at a Myanmar embassy or consulate.

Can I apply three months before my trip?

Only if you will enter within 90 days of the approval letter's issue date; otherwise the letter expires and entry will be refused.

Can I stay longer than 28 days?

Not on a Tourist eVisa, which cannot be extended. Plan your departure within the 28 days.

Can I stay with friends instead of a hotel?

The tourist notice requires tourists to stay in registered hotels, motels, inns, guest houses, resorts or boats.
