Who needs a K2 visa
Foreigners need a Mongolian visa unless an international agreement exempts them. The Immigration Agency publishes the list of visa-exempt nationalities and a separate list of nationalities that may use the e-visa. The K2 category belongs to the temporary visitor group, alongside K1 for business, K3 for border-area tourists, K4 for cultural and sporting events and film production, K5 for transport crews, K6 for transit and K8 for medical treatment.
Invitation
Unlike most categories, K2 tourist visas and K3 and K4 visas can be requested with or without an inviting person or organisation in Mongolia. Where a tour operator or host invites you, the inviting party files the visa permission with the Immigration Agency, and the visa is then issued at the Mongolian mission or border checkpoint named in the permission. If the place of issue changes, the permission has to be requested again.
Fees
Under Government Resolution No. 195 of 2021, as amended in 2022, an entry visa costs USD 45 for a single entry and USD 60 for a double entry, each with a USD 5 service fee. Multiple-entry visas cost USD 100 for up to six months and USD 200 for six months to a year. Visa permissions cost MNT 2,500 per person. Stamp duty is doubled for urgent services or services at a border checkpoint, and foreign currency is converted at the Bank of Mongolia rate of the day.
Length of stay
The Immigration Agency sets the stay and validity of each visa type: single- and double-entry entry visas allow stays of up to 90 days within a validity of 150 days; multiple-entry visas for temporary visitors allow stays of up to 30 days within 183 or 365 days; transit visas allow up to 10 days within 150 days; and day visas for border-area tourists allow up to 3 days.
Extending a tourist stay
A temporary visitor, or a foreigner who arrived visa-free under an agreement, may extend the stay once for up to 30 days, under Article 19.2 of the Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals. The request is filed at least five working days before the visa expires, with the inviter's letter, a copy of the passport page, the visa, the entry stamp and the payment receipt. A further extension can be requested only 90 days after the previous one ended, and visitors fined for breaking the law on foreigners cannot extend.
