The three B categories

B1 is for an investor in a business entity with foreign investment. B2 is for a foreigner appointed as the investor’s representative or as executive manager of such a company. B3 is for a foreigner who heads the representative office of a foreign legal entity. Each has a dependant category (B1-1, B2-1, B3-1) for related persons, and in each case the inviting organisation files the visa request.

Switching from a K1 visa

A foreigner who arrived on a K1 business visa may apply for a B1, B2 or B3 residence permit. A temporary visitor who entered without a visa under one of Mongolia's mutual travel agreements may apply only for B1. Nationals without such an agreement arrive either on the B visa requested by their company or on a K1 visa.

The Agency’s list for B1 includes the inviting company’s request describing its activity and the purpose and length of the foreigner’s stay; the company’s state registration certificate and any special licence; a colour copy of the passport; the page with the Mongolian visa and entry stamp; a 3.5 x 4.5 cm colour photo taken within six months; a statement from the central government body in charge of investment; a certificate of address from the soum or khoroo governor; tax and social insurance statements for the last three years where needed; and the authorisation and ID of the employee filing the request.

Ordinary processing takes 10 working days and urgent processing 8. Payment is made against the invoice generated when the request is sent online, and fees paid for a wrongly chosen service are not refunded. The application for a residence permit is filed with the Immigration Agency within 21 days of crossing the border. Applicants may be required to take a medical examination. If the permit is refused, a new request can be made after 90 days. When the Agency reports that the card has been printed, the applicant brings the original passport to collect it.

Living in Mongolia on a B permit

Residents register their address with the soum office or khoroo governor within 14 days, and report every change of address; registering a change costs MNT 2,500. A lost or damaged residence card is replaced for MNT 36,000 (MNT 72,000 urgent) plus USD 7. A holder of an employment residence permit can change only to an investment permit, not to other forms, and requests to change form are made at least five days before the permit expires.
