Who uses the K1 visa

The Immigration Agency lists K1 as the temporary visitor category for foreigners coming to Mongolia through business channels: meetings, negotiations and similar trips arranged by a Mongolian company or organisation. The request is always filed by the inviting organisation, not by the traveller. K1 is separate from the B categories for investors and executives of companies with foreign investment and from the C categories for employment.

The e-visa covers tourism (K2), events (K4) and transit (K6) for the nationalities on the Agency's e-visa list; it does not cover K1. A business traveller who is not visa-exempt therefore needs a K1 visa obtained through an inviting organisation.

Visa fees and durations

Single- and double-entry visas allow a stay of up to 90 days within a validity of 150 days and cost USD 45 and USD 60. Multiple-entry temporary visitor visas allow up to 30 days per stay and are valid for 183 or 365 days; they cost USD 100 up to six months and USD 200 from six months to one year. Each visa carries a USD 5 service fee. Urgent services and services at a border checkpoint cost double the stamp duty.

Visa permission and where the visa is issued

The inviting organisation applies to the Immigration Agency for a visa permission, which costs MNT 2,500 per person. The permission names the Mongolian diplomatic mission or border checkpoint where the visa will be issued, usually the mission responsible for the traveller's place of residence; if that place changes, the permission has to be requested again.

  1. Agree the trip with the Mongolian organisation that will invite you.
  2. The organisation files the K1 visa permission request with the Immigration Agency and names the mission or checkpoint of issue.
  3. Once the permission is granted, apply for the visa at the mission or checkpoint named in it.
  4. Pay the visa fee and the USD 5 service fee.
  5. Enter within the validity and leave within the permitted stay, or ask your host to request an extension at least five working days before expiry.

Moving to a residence permit

Foreigners who arrived on a K1 visa may apply, within 21 days of crossing the border, for any employment (C) residence permit, for the investment permits B1, B2 and B3, and for the E5 permit for innovation and research. Foreigners who entered visa-free under a travel agreement can apply only for B1. These applications are made to the Immigration Agency in Mongolia.

Extending the stay

A temporary visitor can extend the stay once, by up to 30 days. The inviting party’s official letter giving the reason, a passport page copy, the visa, the entry stamp and the payment receipt are submitted at least five working days before the visa expires. The stamp duty is MNT 40,000 for up to seven days and rises by MNT 5,600 for each further day, to MNT 168,800 for 30 days. A new extension can be requested only 90 days after the previous one expired, and visitors penalised for breaking the law on foreigners are not extended.
