Luxembourg seasonal work visa

Visa D for a residence permit for seasonal workers

In short

Seasonal workers in harvesting, tourism, hotels, restaurants and peak-season transport can obtain a residence permit valid for five months in any twelve. The employer first gets an ADEM certificate after a three-week vacancy, and you apply for a visa D with a seasonal contract paying at least the social minimum wage and proof of housing.

Which jobs count as seasonal

Guichet.lu lists the activities: harvesting (including grape picking) and packing harvested products; leisure and holiday instructors and coordinators; tour and tourist guides; monitoring and upkeep of beaches, outdoor pools and campsites; work in shops, hotels and restaurants that open only part of the year or have a regular, predictable peak; and jobs in aviation and passenger transport companies with seasonal peaks.

The route is for people living abroad, or for people already legally in Luxembourg who have not worked there and want to do seasonal work.

Contract, ADEM and housing

As for salaried workers, the employer declares the vacancy to ADEM and may request a hiring certificate if no suitable candidate is proposed within three weeks. Your seasonal contract, dated and signed by both parties, must pay at least the monthly social minimum wage and state the parties, start date, workplace, job, working time and pay.

You also need proof of suitable housing: a lease or notarial deed for a property in Luxembourg stating its surface area, and the landlord's written consent with ID copy if the lease limits use to the original tenant and you are not named in it. Add your CV, the diplomas or qualifications the job requires, a criminal record extract and travel health insurance.

How the visa D application works since 1 October 2026

Since 1 October 2026 Luxembourg no longer asks first-time applicants to obtain a temporary authorisation to stay from Luxembourg before the visa. You file one visa D application for a residence permit "seasonal worker" with the Luxembourg (or, where Luxembourg has no post, Belgian) embassy responsible for your country of residence, or with its external service provider. Files lodged on or before 30 September 2026 continue under the old procedure.

The embassy only forwards complete files; the decision is taken by the General Department of Immigration (DGIM) of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Receipt of the file does not mean it is complete. The national visa form is completed in English or French, with one ICAO photo under three months old and a passport issued within the last ten years and valid at least six months beyond the planned stay. Documents in other languages than English, French or German need a sworn translation.

The approval letter for a seasonal worker visa D comes with written information on your rights and obligations, including the appeal procedures.

  1. The employer declares the seasonal vacancy to ADEM and requests the hiring certificate after three weeks without a candidate.
  2. Sign the seasonal contract and secure accommodation in Luxembourg with a lease stating the surface area.
  3. Lodge the visa D application in person at the competent Luxembourg embassy or consulate or its service provider, with the form in English or French, and pay the EUR 50 fee.
  4. After approval, travel on the visa D; the permit period starts with your arrival declaration.
  5. Within three days of arrival declare your address at the commune, then complete the medical check.
  6. Apply to the DGIM for the residence permit on MyGuichet.lu or by post at least three months before the visa D ends; pay EUR 80 when approved and give biometrics.

Forms

After arrival: declaration, medical check and residence card

The visa D is valid for six months and only opens the door; the residence permit is issued in Luxembourg. Within three days of arrival you declare your arrival at the commune where you live, showing your passport with the valid visa and, if you have it, your lease. The date of that declaration normally becomes the start date of the residence permit, and no permit is issued without a valid legal address.

As soon as possible you also complete the medical check for foreigners: an examination by a general practitioner, internist or paediatrician practising in Luxembourg plus a tuberculosis screening (at a laboratory on the doctor's prescription or at the Ligue médico-sociale; children between 2 months and 2 years have a tuberculin test at the Ligue). The Health Directorate sends the resulting certificate directly to the General Department of Immigration (DGIM).

The residence permit application must reach the DGIM, in the same category as your visa, no later than three months before the visa D expires. It can be filed on MyGuichet.lu (with or without LuxTrust or eID) or by post, with a full copy of the passport, the commune's arrival declaration and proof of suitable housing if it was not already in the visa file. When it is approved you pay the EUR 80 issuance fee, book an appointment for photo and fingerprints, and collect the biometric card about one week later.

Validity and renewal

The seasonal permit is valid for five months within a twelve-month period, starting on the date of your arrival declaration. It can be renewed several times if you renew the contract with the same employer; with a new employer it can be renewed only once. When the seasonal permit expires you cannot switch to another residence category.
