Luxembourg internship visa for trainees

Visa D for a residence permit for trainees (stagiaire)

In short

Third-country nationals who want to do a traineeship of more than three months in Luxembourg, as part of higher education studies or within two years of graduating, apply for a visa D for the "trainee" category. A training agreement and means of at least 80% of the REVIS are required, and the decision normally comes within 60 days.

Who can apply

The trainee permit applies only when you will stay more than three months and the traineeship is linked to your higher education studies, or takes place within two years of completing them. You must either be enrolled in a course leading to a higher education diploma or have obtained such a diploma within the two years before the application. Applicants under 18 need parental authorisation.

Three exceptions point to other categories. Holders of a Luxembourg student permit doing a traineeship within their course need no new permit. Intra-group traineeships of more than three months use the intra-corporate transferee (ICT) category. Holders of a residence permit from another EU state still need the Luxembourg trainee permit for traineeships over three months.

Training agreement and proof of means

The core document is a Luxembourg training agreement providing both theoretical and practical training. It must contain the traineeship programme, its duration, the conditions of integration and supervision, and the schedule. The host entity also completes a financial statement of support for the trainee, using the official form.

Your resources must reach at least 80% of the REVIS in force, which on the June 2026 parameters is roughly EUR 1,555 a month for one person. The allowance in the training agreement, a grant or student loan certificate, a bank statement or a certificate of financial support are all accepted as evidence.

How the visa D application works since 1 October 2026

Since 1 October 2026 Luxembourg no longer asks first-time applicants to obtain a temporary authorisation to stay from Luxembourg before the visa. You file one visa D application for a residence permit "trainee" with the Luxembourg (or, where Luxembourg has no post, Belgian) embassy responsible for your country of residence, or with its external service provider. Files lodged on or before 30 September 2026 continue under the old procedure.

The embassy only forwards complete files; the decision is taken by the General Department of Immigration (DGIM) of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Receipt of the file does not mean it is complete. The national visa form is completed in English or French, with one ICAO photo under three months old and a passport issued within the last ten years and valid at least six months beyond the planned stay. Documents in other languages than English, French or German need a sworn translation.

  1. Agree the traineeship with the Luxembourg host and sign the training agreement.
  2. Have the host complete the financial statement of support for trainees.
  3. Fill in the national visa D form in English or French and tick the residence category you need.
  4. Lodge the visa D application in person at the competent Luxembourg embassy or consulate or its service provider, with the form in English or French, and pay the EUR 50 fee.
  5. Wait for the decision (in principle 60 days) and collect the six-month visa D.
  6. Within three days of arrival declare your address at the commune, then complete the medical check.
  7. Apply to the DGIM for the residence permit on MyGuichet.lu or by post, pay EUR 80 when approved and give biometrics.

Forms

Processing time

The response time is in principle 60 days. If information is missing, you are told what to send and by when; the 60-day clock stops meanwhile, and a file that is not completed within the deadline is rejected. No answer within three months means the application can be considered refused.

After arrival: declaration, medical check and residence card

The visa D is valid for six months and only opens the door; the residence permit is issued in Luxembourg. Within three days of arrival you declare your arrival at the commune where you live, showing your passport with the valid visa and, if you have it, your lease. The date of that declaration normally becomes the start date of the residence permit, and no permit is issued without a valid legal address.

As soon as possible you also complete the medical check for foreigners: an examination by a general practitioner, internist or paediatrician practising in Luxembourg plus a tuberculosis screening (at a laboratory on the doctor's prescription or at the Ligue médico-sociale; children between 2 months and 2 years have a tuberculin test at the Ligue). The Health Directorate sends the resulting certificate directly to the General Department of Immigration (DGIM).

The residence permit application must reach the DGIM, in the same category as your visa, no later than three months before the visa D expires. It can be filed on MyGuichet.lu (with or without LuxTrust or eID) or by post, with a full copy of the passport, the commune's arrival declaration and proof of suitable housing if it was not already in the visa file. When it is approved you pay the EUR 80 issuance fee, book an appointment for photo and fingerprints, and collect the biometric card about one week later.
