Hungary researcher visa (research residence permit)

Residence permit for research (kutatás célú tartózkodási engedély)

In short

Researchers coming to Hungary need a hosting agreement with an accredited research organisation, which also undertakes to cover removal costs if needed. The permit is issued for 1 to 2 years and can be renewed; the host can file the application through Enter Hungary with the researcher’s consent.

Apply on Enter Hungary (OIF electronic application portal) checked 23 October 2026

Where to apply
Abroad at the Hungarian mission responsible for your residence, or by the host via Enter Hungary.

Who qualifies

You need a hosting agreement with an accredited research organisation in Hungary. The host must also give a written undertaking to pay the costs of your removal if you overstay without means. Asylum seekers, protection holders, EU long-term residents of another member state, intra-corporate transferees, trainees and highly qualified workers apply under their own routes instead.

Documents

Submit the hosting agreement, proof of means (employer or tax income certificate, foreign income certificate or a bank statement in your name), proof of health coverage and a passport with a ticket or the money for one. The Hungarian address is declared on the form. On renewal, documents that have not changed need not be resubmitted.

Required documents

Identity

  • OIF residence permit application form, completed and signed (minors: signed by both parents, with notarised parental consent).
  • Passport issued within 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond the permit with two blank pages; two biometric photos no older than 3 months.

Travel

  • Hungarian address declared on the form (no separate document for study and research), and a ticket or the money to buy one.

Money

  • Proof of means: employer or tax income certificate, foreign income certificate, or bank statement in your name.

Work

  • Hosting agreement with an accredited Hungarian research organisation, plus the host’s written undertaking to cover removal costs.

Insurance

  • Proof of full health coverage: Hungarian social insurance, cover under an international agreement, or funds to pay for care.

Other

  • For EU mobility: mobility plan with dates and the research permit issued by the other member state.

Applying from abroad

Visa-required nationals must obtain the residence permit before travelling; a Schengen visa does not allow research work beyond 90 days. Book an appointment on the Hungarian consular booking system and choose the correct purpose of stay: a wrong category means the file is not accepted and you must rebook. The file is lodged in person at the Hungarian mission responsible for your residence (or its service provider), usually followed by an interview; third parties cannot lodge it for you.

Bring the OIF application form filled in and signed, originals and copies of all documents, a passport valid at least three months with two blank pages issued within ten years, and two biometric photos no older than three months. Incomplete files are not forwarded to the immigration authority until the missing papers arrive. If approved, a single-entry D visa valid for 3 months (30 days’ stay) is issued so you can travel and collect the card; the approval lapses if you do not enter within 3 months.

  1. Sign a hosting agreement with an accredited Hungarian research organisation.
  2. Decide whether you apply yourself at the mission or the host files through Enter Hungary with your written consent.
  3. If applying from abroad, book on the consular booking system, lodge the file at the Hungarian mission and pay EUR 110.
  4. Attend the interview and give biometrics; wait for the decision (15 days administrative time).
  5. Travel on the D visa within 3 months and receive the card by post in Hungary.

Renewal, mobility and next steps

Renewals are filed in Hungary via Enter Hungary, 90 to 30 days before expiry, after at least 90 days in every 180 spent in Hungary; the host may file with your written consent. Researchers holding another EU state’s research permit can use a short-term mobility certificate (up to 180 days in 360) or a long-term mobility permit (over 180 days, up to 365).

When the research ends, a holder of a valid research permit can apply in Hungary for a job-seeking or business-start permit of up to 9 months, if the planned job matches the level of the research.

Refusal and appeal

A refusal can be appealed within 8 days of delivery, to the authority that decided or through the Hungarian mission where you applied, by appointment. The appeal fee abroad is EUR 160. Late appeals, appeals without reasons or appeals relying on facts you already knew before the decision are rejected without examination.

Frequently asked questions

Can my university apply for me?

Yes. The host organisation can submit the application, and later renewals, through Enter Hungary with your written consent.

I am a researcher in Germany. Do I need a Hungarian permit for a 4-month project?

No full permit is needed for up to 180 days in a 360-day period: a short-term mobility certificate based on your EU research permit covers it. Longer stays need a long-term mobility permit.

How long is the permit?

At least one year (or the hosting agreement if shorter) and up to two years, renewable for up to two years at a time.

Can I stay to look for a job after the project?

Yes. With a valid research permit and the research completed, you can apply in Hungary for a job-seeking or business-start permit of up to 9 months.
