Who qualifies

You qualify if you are employed by an employer outside Hungary and do that work from Hungary using digital technology, or if you own a share in a profitable company outside Hungary and run it or work for it from Hungary. You cannot use the White Card if you qualify for or hold certain other permits (for example guest investor, guest self-employment, Hungarian Card, study, intra-corporate transfer) or are in the asylum system.

Documents

Employees submit an authentic employer certificate confirming remote work and its permitted duration, the role and that the employer really operates. Company owners submit documents on the company’s operations, their role and ownership share. Everyone adds income proof, accommodation proof (lease, free-use agreement, deed or paid booking), health coverage, a valid passport and a ticket or the money for one.

Required documents

Identity

  • OIF application form (or the electronic form on Enter Hungary), completed and signed.
  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the permit, issued within 10 years with two blank pages; a passport photo (the mission may ask for biometric photos).

Travel

  • A ticket home or the money to buy one.

Money

  • Bank statements for the last 6 months or regular-income certificates showing at least EUR 3,000 net a month.

Work

  • Employees: employer certificate confirming remote work, its permitted duration, your role and the employer’s real operations. Owners: documents on the foreign company’s operations, your role and ownership share.

Insurance

  • Proof of full health coverage: Hungarian social insurance, an international agreement, or funds to pay for care.

Other

  • Accommodation proof: lease, free-use agreement, ownership deed or paid booking.

Income requirement

You must have earned at least EUR 3,000 net per month in the six months before entering Hungary and keep that income throughout the stay. Proof is six months of bank statements, or certificates of regular income from the employer or the tax authority.

Applying and entering

Apply at the Hungarian mission serving your nationality or residence, after booking on the consular system. No separate visa application is needed: on approval a D visa valid 3 months (one entry, 30 days) is issued, and the card lapses if you do not enter and start your stay within 3 months.

  1. Check that your net income was at least EUR 3,000 in each of the last 6 months.
  2. Get the employer certificate (or company documents) and bank statements.
  3. Arrange accommodation in Hungary and health coverage.
  4. Book on the consular booking system, lodge the file at the Hungarian mission and pay EUR 110.
  5. After approval, enter within 3 months on the D visa and receive the card.
  6. If you want a second year, extend once via Enter Hungary 90–30 days before expiry.

Renewal and changes

Renewals are filed only inside Hungary through Enter Hungary, no earlier than 90 and no later than 30 days before expiry, while the permit is valid and after at least 90 days in every 180 spent in Hungary. The White Card can be extended only once, for up to one year, and only for the same purpose.

Restrictions

You may not work for or on behalf of a Hungarian employer or acquire a stake in a Hungarian business; doing so can lead to revocation. Family members cannot receive family permits, the card does not count towards a national residence card, and after the card is issued you cannot apply in Hungary for any other residence permit.

Refusal and appeal

Appeal within 8 days of delivery, to the authority that decided or through the consulate where you applied. The appeal fee abroad is EUR 160; appeals filed late, without reasons or based on facts you knew before the decision are rejected without examination.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to earn for the Hungarian White Card?

At least EUR 3,000 net per month in the six months before entry, and the same level throughout the stay.

Can my spouse come with me?

Not on a family permit: OIF does not issue family reunification permits to White Card holders’ relatives, apart from a child born in Hungary. A spouse would need their own permit.

Can I take Hungarian clients?

You may not work for or on behalf of a Hungarian employer or acquire a share in a Hungarian business; breaking this can lead to revocation of the card.

Does the White Card lead to permanent residence?

No. It is limited to two years in total and cannot be used for a national residence card or to switch to another permit in Hungary.
