Who qualifies

You need a traineeship agreement with an approved host organisation and either a higher education degree obtained in the two years before applying or current enrolment in the degree the traineeship requires. You must have the language skills the placement needs.

What the traineeship agreement must contain

The agreement describes the training programme and its educational goals, its duration, placement and supervision arrangements, the number of hours, and the legal relationship between trainee and host. The host must also undertake in writing to bear responsibility for you throughout the stay, especially living and accommodation costs, and to pay removal costs if you overstay without means.

Required documents

Identity

  • OIF residence permit application form, completed and signed (minors: signed by both parents, with notarised parental consent).
  • Passport issued within 10 years, valid at least 3 months beyond the permit with two blank pages; two biometric photos no older than 3 months.

Travel

  • Hungarian address declared on the form (no separate document for study and research), and a ticket or the money to buy one.

Money

  • Proof of means: bank statement, savings, securities, notarised family support declaration with proof, or scholarship.

Work

  • Traineeship agreement with the approved host organisation, including the host’s responsibility and removal-cost undertakings.

Study

  • Degree certificate (obtained in the last 2 years) or certificate of current enrolment.
  • Proof of language skills: language exam certificate or proof of studies in that language.

Insurance

  • Proof of full health coverage: Hungarian social insurance, cover under an international agreement, or funds to pay for care.

Applying from abroad

Visa-required nationals must obtain the residence permit before travelling; a Schengen visa does not allow a traineeship beyond 90 days. Book an appointment on the Hungarian consular booking system and choose the correct purpose of stay: a wrong category means the file is not accepted and you must rebook. The file is lodged in person at the Hungarian mission responsible for your residence (or its service provider), usually followed by an interview; third parties cannot lodge it for you.

Bring the OIF application form filled in and signed, originals and copies of all documents, a passport valid at least three months with two blank pages issued within ten years, and two biometric photos no older than three months. Incomplete files are not forwarded to the immigration authority until the missing papers arrive. If approved, a single-entry D visa valid for 3 months (30 days’ stay) is issued so you can travel and collect the card; the approval lapses if you do not enter within 3 months.

  1. Agree a traineeship with an approved Hungarian host and get the signed agreement and undertakings.
  2. Prepare your diploma or student certificate and language proof.
  3. Book on the consular booking system, lodge the file at the Hungarian mission and pay EUR 110.
  4. Attend the interview; after approval collect the D visa and enter within 3 months.

Limits of the permit

The permit ends with the traineeship and at the latest after six months; it cannot be extended. During or after it you cannot apply in Hungary for a permit with another purpose, so any later stay must start with a new application from abroad.

Refusal and appeal

A refusal can be appealed within 8 days of delivery, to the authority that decided or through the Hungarian mission where you applied, by appointment. The appeal fee abroad is EUR 160. Late appeals, appeals without reasons or appeals relying on facts you already knew before the decision are rejected without examination.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extend my traineeship permit?

I graduated three years ago. Can I apply?

Not under this permit: the degree must have been obtained within the two years before the application, unless you are currently studying for the required degree.

Can I switch to a job after the internship?

Not from inside Hungary: holders cannot apply for a permit with a different purpose during or after the traineeship permit.
