Cambodia retirement visa (ER extension)

Retirement extension of stay (ER) on an Ordinary Visa

In short

Cambodia has no separate retirement visa to apply for abroad. Retirees enter on an Ordinary Visa (E) and then apply inside Cambodia for an ER extension of stay for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, which can be renewed. Applicants are generally 55 or older, no longer employed and able to show sufficient funds.

Who qualifies

The Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin describes the ER extension as intended for people aged 55 or over, with exceptions possible. You must show that you are retired and no longer employed, for example with a pension statement or a social security entitlement letter, and that you have enough money to support yourself, for example with bank statements or a statement from your pension provider.

No minimum income or deposit amount is published on the official pages consulted. Health insurance is not a requirement for the extension, although the embassy recommends it strongly for retirees.

Two-stage procedure

First you obtain an Ordinary Visa (E): online on evisa.gov.kh for USD 35, through a Cambodian embassy, or on arrival. Do not enter on a Tourist Visa, because a T visa cannot be converted into an ER extension. The E visa gives you 30 days in Cambodia.

Within those 30 days you apply for the extension of stay at the immigration office; the embassy notes that this can also be done through a visa agent. Once granted, the extension appears with the code ER.

  1. Gather proof of retirement and of your funds before leaving home.
  2. Obtain an Ordinary Visa (E) online on evisa.gov.kh, through a Cambodian embassy, or on arrival.
  3. Enter Cambodia and submit the e-Arrival form; your 30 days start at immigration.
  4. Before the 30 days end, apply for an ER extension of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at the immigration office.
  5. Renew the extension before it expires; choose 6 or 12 months if you need to travel abroad.

Durations and renewals

ER extensions are granted for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months and can be renewed repeatedly. One- and three-month extensions are single-entry, so a trip abroad would end them and you would need a new visa to return. Six- and twelve-month extensions are multiple-entry, which suits retirees who travel regularly. The passport must have at least six months of validity.

What ER does and does not allow

ER holders do not need a work permit, because the extension is meant for people who are not working. If you take up employment, the appropriate class is EB together with a work permit. Every entry to Cambodia also requires the free e-Arrival form.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum pension for the Cambodian retirement visa?

No fixed amount is published on the official pages consulted. You must show that your funds are sufficient, typically with bank or pension statements.

Can I apply for the ER extension before travelling?

No. Only the E visa is obtained before travel; the ER extension is applied for inside Cambodia.

What if I am younger than 55?

The embassy states that applicants are generally 55 or older but that exceptions may exist; ask the immigration office about your case.

Do I need health insurance?

It is not required for the ER extension, but Cambodian missions recommend it for retirees.

Can I travel abroad on a one-month ER extension?

You can leave, but one- and three-month extensions are single-entry, so the extension ends when you exit and you need a new visa to return. Six- and twelve-month extensions allow re-entry.
