Who should choose the E visa

According to Cambodian missions, the E visa is for people who have accepted a job offer in Cambodia, have been invited by a registered Cambodian company or organisation, or are sent to Cambodia on business by a registered company. It is also the starting point for retirees, students and job seekers who want to stay longer, because the long-stay extensions are only granted on an E visa.

Since January 2023 the E visa can be applied for online by nationals of all countries, so it can be obtained online, through a Cambodian embassy or on arrival.

Supporting documents

The online form asks for a passport with more than six months of validity, a digital photo and card payment. Cambodian missions list as typical supporting documents a letter of invitation from a company or organisation in Cambodia and a letter from the sending company. These letters become essential later, when you apply for an EB extension.

  • Passport valid for more than six months at entry

Where to apply

Online on evisa.gov.kh for USD 35, with the same port restrictions as all e-Visas. Through a Cambodian embassy if you will enter by a land crossing or port that does not accept e-Visas. A visa on arrival is also available at international airports and land border checkpoints.

  1. Collect the invitation letter and the letter from your employer or sending company.
  2. Apply for Visa E on evisa.gov.kh (USD 35), or through a Cambodian embassy if you enter by a port that does not accept the e-Visa.
  3. Receive the visa by e-mail within about three working days and submit the e-Arrival before travel.
  4. Enter Cambodia within three months of issue; your 30 days start at immigration.
  5. Before the 30 days end, apply to the immigration authorities for the EB, EG, ER or ES extension that fits your situation.
  6. If you will work, obtain a work permit in addition to the extension.

Working legally

An E visa and an EB extension allow you to stay, but they do not by themselves give the right to work: a separate work permit is still needed. Every traveller must also complete the free Cambodia e-Arrival within 7 days before arrival, and the digital v-Pass replaces the entry stamp.

E-class extensions of stay

After entry, the E visa can be extended inside Cambodia in one of four classes. EB (business) is for employees, freelancers, volunteers and their dependants, for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months; a stamped employment letter from a Cambodian company is usually required, and self-employed people need business registration documents. EG (job seeker) allows 1, 3 or 6 months, generally single-entry. ER (retirement) and ES (student, with an enrolment letter from a registered school and proof of funds) are available for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

One- and three-month extensions are single-entry: leaving Cambodia ends them. Six- and twelve-month extensions allow multiple entries. Extension fees are not published on the official pages consulted for this guide; ask the immigration office before applying.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a tourist visa into an EB extension?

No. Long-stay E-class extensions are granted only to holders of an Ordinary Visa (E), so enter on an E visa if you plan to stay.

Does an EB extension let me work?

Not on its own. The EB extension covers your stay; a work permit is still required.

Can I leave and come back during an extension?

Only on a 6- or 12-month extension, which is multiple-entry. One- and three-month extensions are single-entry.

Is the E visa only for business people?

No. It is also the visa used by retirees, students and job seekers who plan to obtain ER, ES or EG extensions.
