Andorra work and residence permit

Residence and work authorisation (A.1)

In short

Newcomers employed in Andorra need the residence and work authorisation (A.1), which allows them to live and work there for its validity. It requires a place within the regulatory quota, an indefinite employment contract with a company legally established in Andorra and permanent residence in the country. The first authorisation lasts one year and is renewable three times for two years, then for ten years.

Who can apply

Any newcomer who fits within the quota established by regulation, holds an indefinite employment contract with a company legally constituted in Andorra and establishes permanent and effective residence in the Principality can apply. The authorisation allows the holder to reside and work in the country for its validity.

The Government's information note for non-EU nationals adds two conditions: higher education or an equivalent qualification and/or six years of professional experience for the post to be filled, and proof that you are lawfully present in the Schengen area. Seasons already worked in the same occupation for an Andorran company reduce the extra experience needed: one season leaves five years to prove, two seasons four, three seasons three, four seasons two, five seasons one, and six seasons none. A winter season counts if you worked at least four full months in that occupation, a summer season three full months.

How the application is handled

The Immigration Service of the Government of Andorra handles the file and receives the public Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 13:00, by appointment only; the general government line is +376 875 700. When the documents are presented, the Service gives you a date and time for the medical check at the Immigration Medical Service on the next working day, and you do not need to fast for it. If every requirement is met, the initial authorisation is issued the day after the medical check.

  1. Secure an indefinite contract with an Andorran company.
  2. Apostille or legalise foreign documents.
  3. Submit the application to the Immigration Service.
  4. Attend the immigration medical check on the next working day.
  5. Register with your comú within three months.

After approval

Register with the comú of the parish where you live within three months of the authorisation and provide proof of registration within the same period. Foreign official documents must carry the Hague apostille or be legalised.

Validity and renewals

The first authorisation is for one year, renewable three times for two years each. After seven years, renewals are issued for ten years, except for nationals of states that have signed and ratified an agreement with Andorra, who follow their own rules (procedure A.2).

For a renewal (procedure A.2) you must have worked and lived in Andorra permanently and effectively since the authorisation started or was last renewed, and file before it expires. Bring the renewal form, passport, a recent photo, your current authorisation, a CASS points statement, a residence certificate from your comú and, at the first renewal, payslips for the whole period and the Government's certificate of Catalan at level A.1.
