Thailand e-Visa

Thai e-Visa system

In short

All Thai visas, from tourist to DTV, Non-Immigrant, LTR and Privilege visas, are applied for online on thaievisa.go.th, the official system of Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The application is processed by the Thai embassy or consulate responsible for the place where you are located; each mission sets its own processing time and fee, and passports are normally not submitted in person.

Key facts

Processing time
Set by the Thai embassy or consulate handling the application, for example at least 5 to 10 working days in Bucharest or about 14 working days in Islamabad after a complete application
Where to apply
Online only, from outside Thailand, in a country where e-Visa services are available, to the mission responsible for where you are located

Who can use it

You can apply only if you are currently outside Thailand and in a country where the e-Visa service is available. The application is handled by the Thai embassy or consulate responsible for that country, and you may have to stay there for the whole process and prove your current location; missions such as Bucharest no longer require passports to be sent or the embassy to be visited unless they ask for it. Choose the visa type and purpose that match your trip; the system shows the documents for each purpose.

Using the system

One account can hold up to ten applications. Check the spelling of names and your e-mail address carefully, because mistakes can lead to refusal and the fee is not refunded in any case. The result is e-mailed to you; print the approval and present it to the airline and Thai immigration. Video user manuals are available on the e-Visa website.

  1. Decide which visa type and purpose fits your trip and gather the scans listed for it.
  2. Create an account on thaievisa.go.th (one account can hold up to 10 applications) and choose the country where you are currently located; the Thai embassy or consulate responsible for it will process the application.
  3. Select the visa type and purpose, fill in the form and upload the listed documents as clear scans.
  4. Pay the visa fee shown by the system; it is not refunded if the visa is refused or your details are wrong.
  5. Wait for the decision within the processing time of the mission handling your application; answer any request to correct or add documents.
  6. Print the approval e-mail and show it to the airline and Thai immigration on arrival.

Processing time

Each mission sets its own processing time after a complete application, or after you re-submit an application that was returned for correction: Bucharest, for example, quotes at least 5 to 10 working days and Islamabad about 14 working days. Apply well before your flight.

On arrival and during your stay

Your permitted stay is stamped by the immigration officer on arrival. Foreigners staying in Thailand for more than 90 days must report their address to the Immigration Bureau every 90 days, except for categories with special rules such as LTR holders, who report once a year. Extensions of stay are handled by Immigration Bureau offices inside Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to visit a Thai embassy?

Normally not. e-Visa applicants upload their passport and documents and receive the visa by e-mail; a mission may still ask for documents or a visit in individual cases.

Can I apply while I am already in Thailand?

No. The e-Visa must be applied for from outside Thailand.

What if I make a typo in my name?

A spelling mistake can lead to refusal, and the fee is not refunded, so check every field before paying.
