Qatar work visa and work residence permit

Work visa and work residence permit (Qatar ID) sponsored by an employer

In short

Foreigners can only work in Qatar when an employer, or an individual resident, obtains prior work approval and asks the Ministry of Interior for a work visa. After arrival the worker has 30 days for a medical check and fingerprinting, after which the residence permit (Qatar ID) is issued and later renewed for one to three years at a time.

How employment-based entry works

Qatar has no work visa that a foreigner can request alone. According to Hukoomi, business owners, establishments and individual citizens or residents ask the Ministry of Interior to issue work visas for the people they bring in, and only after a prior work approval has been granted. The visa is tied to that employer, who also completes the residence formalities after arrival.

Foreign workers offered a job in Qatar therefore start by signing a contract; Qatari embassies and consulates abroad do not issue work visas on their own initiative. Visa-free entry is a visit status and does not replace the work visa.

Documents usually involved

The employer handles most of the file. Workers should expect to supply a valid passport, passport photos, the signed employment contract and, for professional roles, educational certificates attested by the issuing authority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country and the Qatari embassy there. Police clearance is commonly requested for skilled roles.

Minimum wage

Since March 2021 Qatar applies a non-discriminatory minimum wage to all private-sector workers, including domestic workers: a basic wage of QAR 1,000 a month, plus QAR 500 for accommodation and QAR 300 for food unless the employer provides adequate housing and food. Skilled positions are usually paid well above this, and the salary matters for bringing family: the family residence rules require QAR 10,000 a month, or QAR 7,000 with employer-provided family housing, in the private sector.

From job offer to Qatar ID

The employer obtains work approval and the work visa. The worker enters Qatar on that visa and, according to the Ministry of Interior, must complete a medical check-up within 30 days, give fingerprints and then finish the residence procedures. Hukoomi notes that the future employee attends the Medical Commission with the required documents. Once the steps are complete, the Qatar ID card is issued.

  1. Agree terms and sign the employment contract with the Qatari employer.
  2. Have your diploma and other documents attested in the issuing country and by the Qatari embassy if the employer requires it.
  3. The employer obtains prior work approval and applies to the Ministry of Interior for your work visa.
  4. Travel to Qatar on the issued work visa.
  5. Within 30 days, complete the medical examination and fingerprinting.
  6. Receive your Qatar ID; keep it renewed within 90 days of expiry.

Renewal and late fines

Residence permits for expatriates are renewed by the sponsor for one to three years. Renewal is due within 90 days of expiry; a late renewal is fined QAR 10 per day, up to QAR 6,000, according to the Ministry of Interior.

Bringing your family

A work residence permit lets you sponsor your spouse and children through the family residence visa if you meet its conditions: a technical or specialised profession and at least QAR 10,000 a month (QAR 7,000 with family housing) for private-sector staff, or employer-provided family housing or allowance for government staff.
