Visa-free entry to Qatar for tourists

Visa-free entry (formerly visa on arrival)

In short

Citizens of more than 100 countries can enter Qatar without applying for a visa, and GCC citizens need no visa at all. Visit Qatar uses the term visa-free entry for what used to be called visa on arrival. The Ministry of Interior sets the permitted stay at entry for each nationality, every visitor needs a passport valid three months, a return ticket and health insurance, and a visit does not allow paid work.

Who can enter Qatar visa-free

Visit Qatar lists more than 100 nationalities that can enter without a prior visa, and GCC citizens need no visa at all. The Visit Qatar visa checker shows the category for each passport. The permitted length of stay is set by the Ministry of Interior per nationality; some passports must also hold a hotel booking made through Discover Qatar.

Nationalities that are not on the visa-free list, such as Egypt, Jordan, Kenya, Nigeria, the Philippines or Vietnam, apply in advance for a Hayya e-visa or meet the special conditions shown for them on the visa checker. Holders of a Schengen, US or UK visa or residence permit who are not visa-exempt can use the Hayya A3 permit.

Conditions at the border

The Ministry of Interior asks every visa-free visitor for a passport valid for at least three months, a confirmed return or onward ticket and compulsory health insurance from an insurer registered with the Ministry of Public Health. Entry remains at the discretion of the officer at the border.

The permitted stay is the one granted at entry, not a figure you choose. A visit does not cover employment; anyone coming to work, study, do research or join family must follow Qatari residence rules instead.

What to carry

Keep printed or digital copies of the return ticket, insurance policy and accommodation details; officers may ask for them. Travellers arriving by car through Abu Samra must buy vehicle insurance electronically through the Qatar Unified Bureau and may pre-register on Hayya to speed up the crossing.

During your stay

A visa-free stay cannot be turned into a job. If you need longer than allowed, contact the Ministry of Interior before the permitted period ends; the ministry fines visitors who stay past expiry without an extension QAR 200 per day, up to QAR 12,000.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check your passport's validity and your nationality's category on the Visit Qatar visa checker.
  2. Book a return or onward flight and accommodation for the whole stay.
  3. Buy health insurance valid in Qatar from a company registered with the Ministry of Public Health.
  4. Present your passport and documents at immigration on arrival; e-gates can be used where eligible.
  5. Note the stay granted at entry and leave, or ask the Ministry of Interior for an extension, before it ends.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay in Qatar without a visa?

The Ministry of Interior sets the stay for each nationality at entry, so the period you may stay is the one recorded on entry. An extension must be requested from the ministry before it ends; overstaying costs QAR 200 a day.

Do GCC citizens need a visa?

No. Visit Qatar states that citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates do not need a visa to enter Qatar.

Do I need a Hayya visa if I enter visa-free?

No. Hayya is for nationalities that need an entry permit. Visa-free travellers only use Hayya if they drive in through Abu Samra and choose to pre-register.

Can I attend business meetings on visa-free entry?

Visa-free entry covers visits, not the work permit rules. Any paid activity in Qatar needs a work visa requested by an employer.

Is health insurance checked at the airport?

The Ministry of Interior lists compulsory health insurance among entry requirements, so carry proof. Visit Qatar says a policy can be bought on arrival if you have none.
