Qatar student visa and residence permit
Student visa and student residence permit sponsored by the university (example: Qatar University)
In short
International students in Qatar enter on a student visa arranged by their university, which then sponsors their residence permit. At Qatar University, self-funded applicants request the visa during the admission window and need a third-party funding sponsor; a sponsor in Qatar provides a QAR 20,000 bank guarantee. The entry visa must be converted into a residence permit within one month of arrival.

How student residence works in Qatar
There is no separate student visa that you request from the Ministry of Interior yourself. Each university admits the student and applies for the entry visa and residence permit as sponsor. The details below come from Qatar University, the national university; institutions in Education City and other universities run their own procedures.
Who applies for a QU student visa
Self-funded undergraduate students and students of the Arabic for Non-Native Speakers programme apply for the student visa online during the same admission period. Graduate applicants follow a similar route; QU states that no scholarships are available for master's and PhD applicants. Students awarded a QU scholarship do not apply, because the university arranges their visa.
Students cannot sponsor themselves: a third party must sign the sponsorship declaration.
Bank guarantee
A sponsor living in Qatar provides a bank guarantee of QAR 20,000 (about USD 5,470) from a local bank in favour of Qatar University, valid for five years for bachelor's and PhD studies, three years for a master's and one year for the Arabic programme. A sponsor outside Qatar submits bank statements for the six months before the visa request, in English or Arabic.
After arrival
The entry visa must be converted into a residence permit under QU sponsorship within one month of arrival. This includes a medical examination, fingerprinting and a blood type certificate; a student who fails the medical examination must leave Qatar within 48 hours. Students may not travel abroad until the residence card is issued.
Renewal, transfer and cancellation
Permits are normally issued for one year and renewed through QU's International Students Section. Students already in Qatar under a parent's or employer's sponsorship can transfer to QU sponsorship, except those with a cumulative GPA below 2.5. Graduates and students who withdraw must cancel the permit; QU sets five days after graduation for this.
