Qatar transit visa and Doha stopovers
Qatar transit visa (Discover Qatar Transit Desk, Hamad International Airport)
In short
Passengers who are not visa-exempt and change planes in Doha with Qatar Airways can leave Hamad International Airport on a transit visa if their layover is at least six hours. It is requested at the Discover Qatar Transit Desk inside the airport, and a transit visa of up to four days is available for longer stopovers. Visa-exempt nationalities do not need it, as they can enter visa-free.

Who needs a Qatar transit visa
Passengers who stay airside and continue on their connecting flight need no visa. A transit visa is relevant only if you want to leave Hamad International Airport and your nationality is not on Qatar's visa-free list. GCC nationals and the other exempt nationalities simply pass immigration under the normal visa-free rules.
For visa-exempt passengers a layover in Doha can therefore be turned into a short city visit with only the normal entry documents: a passport valid three months, an onward ticket and health insurance.
Conditions
Visit Qatar sets two conditions: you travel with Qatar Airways and your connection at Hamad International Airport lasts at least six hours. For longer stopovers a transit visa of up to four days is available. The general entry rules still apply, including a passport valid at least three months and health insurance valid in Qatar.
Where and how to get it
There is no online application for this visa. After landing you go to the Discover Qatar Transit Desk in the airport, which also arranges transit tours of Doha. If your stopover is planned in advance and you are not exempt, a Hayya e-visa is the alternative for stays beyond what transit covers.
- Check whether your nationality is visa-exempt; if it is, no transit visa is needed.
- Make sure your Qatar Airways connection in Doha is at least six hours.
- After landing, go to the Discover Qatar Transit Desk at Hamad International Airport.
- Request the transit visa and, if you wish, book a transit tour.
- Return to the airport in good time for your onward flight.
Leaving the airport
Plan to be back well before check-in closes for your onward flight. Overstaying a visit permit in Qatar is fined by the Ministry of Interior at QAR 200 per day, up to QAR 12,000.
Other options for a Doha stopover
The transit desk route only covers Qatar Airways passengers. If you fly another airline, need more than four days, or want certainty before departure, the Ministry of Interior points visitors who are not exempt to the Hayya platform: the A1 tourist e-visa, or the A3 visa for holders of a valid Schengen, US or UK visa or residence permit. The QAR 100 e-visa fee is charged only after approval.
Whatever the route, the Ministry of Interior's entry conditions apply at immigration: a passport valid for at least three months, a confirmed onward or return ticket, and health insurance from a company registered with the Ministry of Public Health. Some nationalities that may enter without a visa must also have a hotel booked through Discover Qatar.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a transit visa if I stay inside Hamad International Airport?
No. A visa is only needed to pass immigration and leave the airport.
Can I get a transit visa if I fly with another airline?
Visit Qatar describes the transit visa for Qatar Airways passengers. Passengers on other airlines who are not exempt should apply for a Hayya e-visa.
How long can I stay on a Qatar transit visa?
Up to four days, according to Visit Qatar.
My passport is visa-exempt and I have a 10-hour layover. What do I need?
Nothing beyond your passport, onward ticket and insurance: visa-exempt nationalities can enter Qatar visa-free during a layover.
Do I need health insurance just for a Doha layover?
If you pass immigration, yes. The Ministry of Interior requires visitors to hold health insurance from a company registered with the Ministry of Public Health; passengers who stay airside do not enter Qatar and are not checked for it.
