Other long-term options

Rentistas already receive an indefinite stay, so they do not need this change. Nationals of MERCOSUR and associated states who entered under the MERCOSUR residence agreement follow their own procedure: they request the change to the MERCOSUR agreement status within 90 days before their temporary residence expires. Relatives of Peruvians hold the family resident status, which is renewed for its own period.

Who can apply

Migraciones accepts the change from foreigners who have resided in Peru for three consecutive years as workers, investors, researchers or members of a religious community. During those three years they may not have been outside Peru for more than 183 consecutive calendar days within any 365-day period, unless they obtained the permit to stay abroad. They must have no police, criminal or judicial records in their country of origin or previous countries of residence. An INDECOPI decision of November 2024 means a representative may now file this procedure.

Income evidence by category

Workers present a current employment contract of at least one year, approved by the labour authority where required and dated within 30 days, the employer's sworn declaration, and either the last three payslips or the fifth-category income certificate, showing gross annual income of at least S/ 55,000 in the previous tax year.

Investors present their annual income tax return to Sunat showing at least S/ 55,000, Sunat's certificate that taxes, fifth-category withholdings and EsSalud contributions are paid, the company's payroll for the last three months showing ten jobs for Peruvians, and the third- or fifth-category income certificate. Researchers show S/ 55,000 through a contract and three payslips or fee receipts plus the income report for the previous year.
