Who can sponsor a family visit

ROP has four versions of the visa, each tied to the host. An Omani citizen can sponsor relatives or friends (subtype 4A). A foreign resident can sponsor relatives (4B), a GCC national living in Oman can sponsor relatives (4C), and a foreigner holding a property owner visa can sponsor relatives (4D).

The sponsor applies and signs an undertaking that they are responsible for the visitor during the stay. The visitor must be outside Oman at the time of application, must not hold another current Omani visa and must not have been refused an Omani visa before.

What the sponsor uploads

Besides the visitor's photo and passport copy, a foreign resident sponsor uploads a copy of their own passport and residence card, while an Omani sponsor uploads a copy of their civil ID card. Proof of the family relationship is required, although ROP notes it may be skipped when names and passport details already show the link.

The sponsor also writes a letter of undertaking stating that they are responsible for the visitor and naming the relationship.

Required documents

  • Digital photograph of the visitor

Travel

  • Copy of the visitor's passport (valid six months on entry)

Family

  • Copy of the sponsor's passport and residence card, or the Omani sponsor's civil ID card
  • Proof of the family relationship

  • Sponsor's letter of undertaking naming the relationship

Fee and length of stay

The visa costs OMR 20 and allows a single entry with a stay of up to three months. It has to be used within three months of issue.

One extension of one month is possible; the extension fee equals the visa fee. The first extension can be requested online by the applicant, while further requests must be made in person at a passports and civil status office. Visitors who overstay are fined OMR 10 per day.

Limits of the visa

The Family Visit Visa is a visit visa: it does not allow work and cannot be turned into residence. Spouses and children who want to live with a resident worker or investor need the relative joining visa instead.

Entry is still at the discretion of the ROP officer at the border, so the visitor should carry a copy of the approved visa and the sponsor's contact details.

How to apply, step by step

  1. The host in Oman confirms which subtype fits (Omani citizen, foreign resident, GCC national or property owner).
  2. The host logs in to the ROP eVisa portal and starts a Family Visit Visa application for the visitor.
  3. The host uploads the visitor's photo and passport copy, their own ID documents, proof of relationship and the undertaking letter.
  4. The host pays the OMR 20 fee online and follows the application on the portal.
  5. The approved visa is sent to the visitor, who travels within three months of issue.
  6. If more time is needed, request the one-month extension before the stay ends.
