Medical visa
In short
Foreign nationals coming to Mauritius for treatment in a private health institution registered with the Ministry of Health under the Private Health Institutions Act receive a medical visa on arrival. Who it is for
The medical visa is for foreign nationals coming for medical treatment provided in a private health care institution duly registered with the Ministry of Health and Quality of Life under the Private Health Institutions Act. Treatment in other settings is not covered by this category. Patients whose nationality needs no visa are still examined by the immigration officer, who sets the length of stay according to the purpose of the visit.
Length of the visa
The visa is granted on arrival for the duration of the treatment, but for no more than six months. Carry the clinic’s confirmation of the treatment plan so that the officer can match the period granted to it. The general entry requirements also apply: a passport valid beyond the stay, a return ticket, the right to return to your country, enough money for treatment and stay, and confirmed accommodation or a sponsor.
Fees
There is no visa fee: the PIO states that visas and extensions of stay are issued free of charge.
If treatment takes longer
If treatment runs beyond the period granted, apply in person to the PIO in Port Louis for an extension before it expires. The PIO asks for the signed extension form, copies of the passport bio page and arrival stamp, a ticket reservation (a confirmed ticket once approved), bank statements for the last three months and a confirmed accommodation booking; where a local person sponsors the stay, their letter, identity document, utility bill, any lease and three months of bank statements. For a minor patient, a consent letter from the parents, the birth certificate and the parents’ passport copies are added.
Conditions
Medical visitors may not take up gainful activity. Staying after the visa expires is an offence; the PIO notes that contraventions of the Immigration Act 2022 can be punished with a fine of up to one million rupees and imprisonment of up to five years.
Contacts and forms
The PIO is at Sterling House, 9-11 Lislet Geoffroy Street, Port Louis, telephone (230) 260 2073, email piomain@govmu.org. The visa extension application form can be downloaded from the PIO downloads page, and the PIO states that applicants for an extension must call at the office personally.
