How visas for Mauritius work
Entry to Mauritius is administered by the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) in Port Louis under the Immigration Act. The PIO’s country-wise visa requirement list for 2025 states, nationality by nationality, whether no visa is required, a visa is granted on arrival or a visa must be obtained before travel. Visas and extensions of stay are issued free of charge, and the final decision on admission and on the length of stay rests with the immigration officer at the port of entry.
Short visits are covered by tourist, business, social, medical and transit categories: tourists may be granted up to six months in a calendar year, and business visitors up to 120 days a year with no more than 90 days per trip. For stays beyond 180 days, the Economic Development Board (EDB) issues the free Premium Visa, valid for up to one year and renewable, for people whose income comes from outside Mauritius.
Working, investing and retiring are handled through EDB permits filed on the National Electronic Licensing System: the Occupation Permit (combined work and residence permit) for professionals earning at least MUR 50,000 a month, investors, innovators and self-employed people, and the residence permit for retired non-citizens aged 50 and over. Foreign students apply on the same system for a student residence permit. Buying a qualifying residential property for at least USD 375,000 gives a residence permit, and long-term residents can obtain a 20-year Permanent Residence Permit.
