Kuwait work visa and work residency

Work entry visa (entry permit for government, private-sector or domestic work) and work residency

In short

Foreigners take up jobs in Kuwait on a work entry permit requested by the employer, then convert it into residency after arrival. The Ministry of Interior issues separate permits for government work, private-sector work and domestic workers, plus permits for temporary government contracts and for commercial or industrial activity. Each costs KWD 3, is valid 90 days from issue and must be turned into residency within 60 days of entry.

Types of work entry permit

The Ministry of Interior lists several residency entry permits linked to work: government work, private-sector work, domestic workers and similar cases, temporary government contracts, and engaging in commercial or industrial activity. The last one is for foreigners who will run or take part in a business rather than be employed by one. In every case the sponsor in Kuwait, not the worker, starts the procedure, and companies use the ministry's company registration and services platform for residency transactions.

Conditions for the entry permit

The worker's passport must be valid for at least one year and six months. The details on the entry permit must match the passport exactly; if they do not, the permit is treated as invalid and the holder is refused entry, so a passport renewed after the permit was issued must be reported to the employer before travel.

Before travelling, the permit holder must visit the Kuwaiti embassy or consulate in their own country and present a criminal record certificate from their home authorities, issued no more than 90 days earlier. Someone who has lived in another country for at least two years presents the certificate of that country instead.

Fees and late penalties

Every work-related entry permit costs KWD 3. The ministry fines delays in completing residency at KWD 2 per day for the first month and KWD 4 per day after that; for domestic workers the fine is KWD 2 per day. Fees are collected in dinars and are not refunded. The ministry's residency e-services also handle payment of visa fees and immigration fines online.

From entry permit to residency

The permit is valid for 90 days from issue, so the worker must enter Kuwait within that period. After arrival the worker has 60 days to complete the procedure for regular residency at the General Directorate of Residency Affairs. The ministry's e-services include a check on whether the medical examination result is ready, which is part of this step, and residency is later renewed through the ministry's residency platforms.

  1. Agree the job with a Kuwaiti employer and send your passport details; check it is valid for at least 18 months.
  2. The employer requests the work entry permit from the Ministry of Interior and pays the KWD 3 fee.
  3. Obtain a criminal record certificate from the authorities of your country (or of the country where you have lived for at least two years), dated within the last 90 days.
  4. Present it at the Kuwaiti embassy or consulate in your country.
  5. Enter Kuwait within 90 days of the permit's issue.
  6. Complete the medical examination and residency procedure at the General Directorate of Residency Affairs within 60 days of entry.

Bringing family

A worker's spouse and children do not travel on the work permit. Once the worker holds residency, family members can be sponsored for the dependent visa, which follows the same 90-day and 60-day rules and the same criminal record step.

Frequently asked questions

Can I look for work in Kuwait on a tourist visa and switch?

Visit visa holders may not work and must leave when the visit ends. A job requires the employer to request a work entry permit, which you then use to enter Kuwait.

Why does my passport need 18 months of validity?

The ministry sets a minimum passport validity of one year and six months for all residency entry permits, because the passport will carry the residence that follows.

Where do I present the criminal record certificate?

At the Kuwaiti embassy or consulate in your own country, before travelling. The certificate comes from your home authorities, or from the country where you have lived for at least two years, and must be no more than 90 days old.

What happens if residency is not completed within 60 days?

A daily fine applies: KWD 2 per day in the first month and KWD 4 per day afterwards, or KWD 2 per day for domestic workers.
