How visas for Kuwait work
Entry to Kuwait and residence in the country are controlled by the Ministry of Interior. Its General Directorate of Residency Affairs supervises who enters and leaves through the border posts, keeps the residence files of foreign residents and records violations. Visas are formally called entry permits, and almost all of them are now requested online through the Kuwait Visa platform at kuwaitvisa.moi.gov.kw, which the ministry's information systems department built and runs.
Short stays fall under visit entry permits. The ministry lists tourism, family visit, private visit, business, government, multiple-entry, transit, transport-driver and emergency visit visas. Most are single entry, valid for 30 days from issue and allow up to 30 days in the country; the tourist visa is the exception, allowing a stay of up to three months. The standard fee is KWD 3, the transit visa costs KWD 2 and the multiple-entry visa KWD 3 plus KWD 1 per month of validity. Visitors who overstay pay KWD 10 per day and may be banned from returning.
Longer stays begin with a residence entry permit requested by a sponsor in Kuwait: an employer for government, private-sector or domestic work, a resident family member for dependants, an educational institution for students, or a commercial licence for foreigners engaging in commercial or industrial activity. These permits require a passport valid for at least one year and six months, are valid for 90 days from issue and must be converted into regular residency within 60 days of arrival. Before travelling, the holder presents a recent criminal record certificate at a Kuwaiti embassy or consulate.
Nationals of 54 countries on the ministry's list, including the EU and Schengen states, the UK, the US and Japan, can obtain a tourist visa either online or on arrival at Kuwait International Airport, and the tourist visa fee table exempts 16 of them from the fee. Work, study and family residence, by contrast, are always started by the sponsor in Kuwait; the Kuwaiti mission in the applicant's country comes in at the criminal record stage, and nationalities not eligible for the e-visa are directed to a Kuwaiti embassy.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Kuwait?
For many travellers it is easy to obtain. Nationals of the 54 countries on the Ministry of Interior's list can get a tourist visa online through Kuwait Visa or on arrival at Kuwait International Airport; other nationalities need a sponsored visit visa or a visa from a Kuwaiti embassy.
How much does a Kuwait visa cost?
Visit visas cost KWD 3 as a rule, the transit visa KWD 2 and the multiple-entry visa KWD 3 plus KWD 1 per month. For the tourist visa the fee depends on nationality: the ministry lists 16 exempt nationalities, such as the United States, the United Kingdom and South Korea, Egyptians pay KWD 9 and other eligible nationalities KWD 3. Residence entry permits cost KWD 3. Fees are collected in dinars and are not refunded.
How long does a Kuwait e-visa take?
The platform says tourist visas are usually decided within one to two business days. Status updates arrive by email or to the mobile number on your account, and you can follow the application under Track Applications.
Can I work in Kuwait on a visit visa?
No. The ministry's instructions state that visit visa holders may not work and must leave when the permitted stay ends. Employment requires a work entry permit requested by the employer and conversion into residency after arrival.
What happens if I overstay in Kuwait?
Overstaying a visit visa costs KWD 10 per day and can lead to a ban on re-entering Kuwait. For residence entry permits not converted in time the fine is KWD 2 per day in the first month and KWD 4 per day after that; for domestic workers it is KWD 2 per day.
My nationality is not eligible for the e-visa. Where do I apply?
When the platform finds that an applicant cannot use the online e-visa, it directs them to apply through a Kuwaiti embassy. Family, business and residence entry permits are a separate route: they are requested by the sponsor in Kuwait.
