Kuwait dependent visa for family members of residents
Dependent visa (entry permit for joining a family member) and family residency
In short
Family members who will live with a resident of Kuwait enter on the dependent visa, officially the entry permit for joining a family member. The resident sponsor requests it from the Ministry of Interior. It costs KWD 3, is valid 90 days from issue, requires a passport valid for 18 months and a recent criminal record certificate, and must be converted into residency within 60 days of arrival.

Who the dependent visa is for
The dependent visa is the residency entry permit for a foreigner who comes to live with a family member already resident in Kuwait, typically the spouse and children of a worker. It is a different permit from the 30-day family visit visa: the visit visa is for a stay, the dependent visa leads to a residence permit tied to the sponsor's own residency.
The ministry's public instructions do not set out which relatives qualify or what salary or job the sponsor must have. These conditions are applied when the sponsor files the request, so the sponsor should confirm them with the General Directorate of Residency Affairs before the family makes travel plans.
Conditions set by the ministry
Each family member needs a passport valid for at least one year and six months, and the details on the entry permit must match it exactly or the permit is void at the border. Before travelling, the family member presents a criminal record certificate no older than 90 days at the Kuwaiti embassy or consulate in their country; someone who has lived in another country for at least two years presents that country's certificate.
Fees
The dependent visa costs KWD 3 per person. If the residency procedure is not completed within the 60 days after entry, a fine of KWD 2 per day applies in the first month and KWD 4 per day after that. Fees and fines are paid in Kuwaiti dinars and can be settled through the ministry's residency e-services.
Timeline
Once issued, the entry permit is valid for 90 days, which is the window for the criminal record step and the journey. After entering Kuwait the family member has 60 days to complete regular residency at the General Directorate of Residency Affairs. Children and spouses are each processed on their own permit, so families travelling together should check that every permit is within its validity.

After arrival
Residency for dependants is linked to the sponsor, and the ministry's individual e-services platform lists dependants alongside the sponsor's own residence record. Family members who were already visiting on a family visit visa cannot simply stay on; the visit visa requires departure when it ends.
