Jordan transit visa: the 72-hour rule, documents and online application

Transit visa (visa for the purpose of passing through, up to 72 hours)

In short

Jordan's transit visa is a prior-approval visa for restricted nationals who need to pass through the country on the way to a third state. It allows a stay of no more than 72 hours from the moment of entry, cannot be renewed, and is applied for on the Ministry of Interior e-services portal by a sponsor, company or institution, with proof that the traveller may enter the destination country.

Who needs a transit visa

The Ministry of Interior offers the transit visa to holders of nationalities that need prior approval for a Jordanian visa, as listed on its restricted-nationalities page. Nationals who are not restricted do not use this route: when they want to leave the airport between flights they enter on an ordinary e-visa or visa on arrival.

The transit visa is for passing through Jordan towards another country. The traveller must already have the right to enter that country, in the form of a visa or residence permit.

The 72-hour condition

The MOI sets two conditions: the traveller must hold one of the nationalities that require prior approval, and the stay in Jordan must not exceed 72 hours from the moment of entry. The visa cannot be renewed, so a traveller who needs more time must apply for a different visa before travelling.

Documents to upload

The applicant uploads a copy of the traveller's passport or travel document valid for at least six months, proof that the traveller can enter the country they are heading to (a visa or residence permit), and, if the traveller lives in a country whose nationality they do not hold, a copy of a residence permit there valid for at least six months.

If the applicant is a foreign individual in Jordan, they add proof of their own lawful residence; if it is a company or institution, a copy of its valid professional licence.

Costs and guarantee

The MOI page for the transit visa refers to the prescribed fees without listing an amount. The ministry's e-applications page sets a service allowance of JOD 2 and a financial guarantee of JOD 1,000 per invited person on electronic applications; previously exempt categories remain exempt. Payment can be made by card through the electronic payment portal or eFAWATEERcom.

Checking the approval

The status of the application can be followed on the enquiry screen of the MOI e-services home page, and the approval notice is printed from the account. According to the ministry, approval notices do not need a signature, because the decision is recorded electronically with the Public Security Directorate and Jordanian embassies. The approval must be used within the period it states.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Confirm that the traveller holds a restricted nationality and will stay no more than 72 hours.
  2. The sponsor, company or institution in Jordan logs in to MOI e-services and selects the transit visa.
  3. Upload the passport copy, onward visa or residence and the other required documents.
  4. Pay the fees and guarantee electronically.
  5. Follow the application and print the approval notice for the traveller.
  6. Leave Jordan within 72 hours of entry.
