Georgia transit visa rules

Transit visa (T category) and airside transit

In short

Stopover passengers who stay in the transit area of a Georgian airport, railway station or seaport need no visa if they can enter their destination and spend no more than 10 days in Georgia. Visa-required nationals who leave that area or cross the country need a transit (T) visa covering up to 10 days.

Who needs a transit visa

The Law on the Legal Status of Aliens defines the T visa as the visa for crossing Georgia, for up to 10 days, to reach a third country; it concerns only visa-required nationals. Article 10 exempts passengers overflying Georgia without landing, crews of international transport and stopover passengers who can enter their destination and stay no more than 10 days without leaving the transit area of the airport, railway station or seaport.

Conditions

Show that you are heading to a third country and can enter it. The usual refusal grounds apply: missing documents, false information, no insurance or funds, an entry ban or an unpaid fine for an earlier unlawful stay.

Documents

Missions want originals, submitted in person: passport, biometric photo (472 x 610 pixels), onward ticket and destination visa, insurance with at least GEL 30,000 cover, proof of funds, fee receipt and signed form.

Required documents

Identity

  • Passport issued within 10 years, valid 3 months beyond the visa

Travel

  • Onward ticket and, if required, the visa of the destination country

Money

  • Proof of funds, such as a bank reference for the past six months

Insurance

  • Health and accident insurance for the time in Georgia, cover of at least GEL 30,000

Other

  • Signed application form, biometric photo and fee receipt

Fee

Georgian missions publish a visa fee of USD 20, paid as each post specifies (the embassy in Jordan wants a bank deposit). If your nationality can use the e-Visa, it costs USD 20 plus a 2% service fee. Fees are not refunded after a refusal.

How to apply

Register on geoconsul.gov.ge, choose the mission and the immigration, ordinary and transit visa service, book a visit and upload the documents. Missions in a third country accept only its residents or holders of its multiple-entry visa. The law sets 10 calendar days for short-stay decisions.

  1. Check whether you will stay inside the transit area for no more than 10 days; if so, no visa is needed.
  2. Check on the MFA Entering Georgia page whether your nationality is visa-free or e-Visa eligible.
  3. Register on geoconsul.gov.ge and book a consular visit for the T visa.
  4. Buy insurance with at least GEL 30,000 cover and pay the visa fee.
  5. Attend with the originals and leave Georgia within the transit period.

Stranded in transit

If you are held in Georgia for more than 10 days during transit against your will, for example by a natural event, repairs, an accident or delays in changing transport, the Public Service Development Agency can defer your obligation to leave once, for up to three months, for GEL 65 within 5 calendar days.

Refusals and appeal

A refusal of a visa or of entry can be appealed to the higher administrative body within 10 calendar days of being served, and that decision can then go to court. Refusals based on an entry ban or unpaid fine, on state security or public order, or on foreign-policy grounds are not appealable.

Visa-free nationals

Nationals on Georgia's visa-free list need no transit visa: their allowance of up to one year covers crossing the country by road, rail or air. Since 1 January 2026 they must still carry health and accident insurance with at least GEL 30,000 of cover for the days spent in Georgia.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to change planes in Tbilisi?

No, if you stay in the transit area, hold a document for your destination and spend no more than 10 days in Georgia.

How long does a transit visa allow?

The law describes the T visa as covering transit through Georgia for up to 10 days.

Do visa-free nationals need a transit visa to cross Georgia by road?

No. A nationality on the visa-free list allows a stay of up to one year, so no T visa is needed. The GEL 30,000 health and accident insurance rule still applies to the days spent in the country.

What if my journey is stuck for more than 10 days?

Ask the Public Service Development Agency to defer your obligation to leave; it costs GEL 65 and is decided within 5 calendar days.
