Georgia digital nomad visa (C5)

Ordinary visa category C5 (stay of up to one year while working for a non-resident person)

In short

Georgia has no separate digital nomad permit, but its aliens law created ordinary visa category C5 for people who come for tourism and work only for a non-resident person whose activity is outside Georgia. A C5 visa gives a one-year stay, may be valid for up to five years and can also be issued to the spouse and minor children. Such work falls outside the Law on Labour Migration, so no right to work is required.

Who the C5 category is for

Article 7 of the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons describes C5 as a visa for people travelling to Georgia for short-term tourism who may carry out activities only for a non-resident person, where those activities relate to that person's business outside Georgia. In practice this covers employees and contractors of foreign companies who work online while living in Georgia.

The visa is relevant only if your passport needs a visa or your visa-free allowance is shorter than a year. Nationals with a one-year visa-free allowance already have the same length of stay.

Evidence to prepare

The general visa rules require proof of purpose, proof of funds for the whole stay and health and accident insurance; documents must be in Georgian or English, and foreign public documents need legalisation or an apostille. For C5, proof of your employment or contract with the non-resident company and of regular income is the core of the purpose evidence. Missions may ask for more documents or an interview.

Required documents

Identity

  • Passport valid 3 months beyond the visa, issued in the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages.

Travel

  • Proof of accommodation in Georgia.

Money

  • Proof of regular income or funds for the whole stay, such as bank statements.

Work

  • Employment or service contract with a company or person that is not resident in Georgia.

  • Health and accident insurance for the whole stay (at least GEL 30,000 cover).

Supporting documents (where they apply)

Family

  • For a spouse or child: marriage or birth certificate, legalised or apostilled.

Taxes and longer plans

A visa does not make you a resident for immigration purposes, and years on C5 do not count towards permanent residence. Anyone planning to settle should look at a residence permit instead. Tax residence is a separate question for the Georgian Revenue Service.

Refusal

The law allows a C5 visa to be refused on grounds of Georgia's immigration policy, and such a refusal cannot be appealed. A visa can also be refused for lack of insurance or funds.

What the visa allows

A C5 visa is an exception to the 90-in-180-day rule: holders may stay for one year, and the visa can be issued as a multiple-entry visa valid for up to five years. The Law on Labour Migration does not apply to work done for a non-resident person in connection with activities outside Georgia, and it also excludes work done fully remotely for a local employer that needs no entry to Georgia. Any job for a Georgian employer or business activity in Georgia, by contrast, needs a right to work.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check whether your nationality already allows a one-year visa-free stay.
  2. If not, register on geoconsul.gov.ge and book a visit at the Georgian mission responsible for you.
  3. Prepare the employment contract, income proof, insurance and accommodation documents in English or Georgian.
  4. Submit the application in person with originals and the fee receipt.
  5. Attend an interview if invited and wait for the decision.
  6. Keep your work limited to the non-resident employer while in Georgia.

Frequently asked questions

Do remote workers from visa-free countries need a C5 visa?

Usually not, because they may stay visa-free for one year. Work for a non-resident employer on activities abroad is outside the Law on Labour Migration.

Can I take a Georgian client on a C5 visa?

No. The category allows work only for a non-resident person. Working for local clients or employers requires a right to work.

Can my family join me?

Yes. The law allows the C5 visa to be issued to the spouse and minor children.

Is the Remotely from Georgia programme still open?

The 2020 programme is not presented as an open route in current official sources. The route set out in the law today is the C5 visa.
