Canada business visitor visa: what you can do

Business visitor (visitor visa for business)

In short

Business visitors come to Canada for days or weeks to attend meetings, conferences and trade fairs or to buy goods and services for a foreign company, without entering the Canadian labour market. Citizens of visa-required countries apply for a visitor visa (CAD 100), visa-exempt travellers for an eTA, and all must show their main place of business and income are outside Canada.

Who is a business visitor

You must plan to stay less than 6 months, not enter the Canadian labour market, have your main place of business and source of income and profits outside Canada, carry supporting documents, and meet the basic entry requirements. Typical activities: buying Canadian goods or services for a foreign business, taking orders, attending meetings, conferences, conventions or trade fairs, giving after-sales service under a warranty or sales agreement, being trained by a Canadian parent company, or training staff of a Canadian branch of a foreign company.

Documents to carry

Bring your passport with the visa, a letter from your employer and from the Canadian host or event, contact details of your business hosts, and proof of funds. If you plan to stay more than 6 months or will do work in Canada, you may need a work permit instead.

Required documents

Identity

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the travel date, with copies of the bio page and all stamped pages

Money

  • Proof of funds for the stay: bank statements, payslips or a host’s financial evidence

Work

  • Letter from your employer abroad describing the trip and confirming your salary is paid outside Canada
  • Invitation from the Canadian company or event organizer, with event code if issued

Other

  • Evidence of ties to your country of residence: employment letter, studies, property, family

Event codes and applying

If your conference or event is registered with IRCC, the organizer gives you an event code to enter in your visa application, which helps identify you as a participant. Otherwise apply as a regular visitor, explaining the business purpose and attaching the invitation and employer letter.

  1. Confirm on IRCC’s site that you need a visitor visa (citizens of visa-required countries do) and create an IRCC account.
  2. Collect the employer letter and Canadian invitation, and ask the organizer for an event code if the event is registered.
  3. Complete the online application, upload the checklist documents and pay CAD 100 plus CAD 85 biometrics.
  4. Within 30 days of the biometric instruction letter, give fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre (VAC).
  5. If approved, submit your passport through the VAC when asked so the visa can be placed in it.
  6. Travel with the visa; the border officer decides how long you may stay, normally up to 6 months.

If your application is refused

IRCC sends a letter explaining the reasons, most often doubts about your ties to your home country, the purpose of travel or your funds. There is no appeal for visitor visas; you can apply again with a new fee and stronger evidence, or seek judicial review at the Federal Court in limited cases.

After-sales service under a warranty or sales agreement is a business visitor activity; hands-on building or installation work may need a work permit, so check the specific rules.
