You must apply from outside Canada, be admissible, buy private health insurance valid for at least 1 year from entry, take an immigration medical exam with an approved panel physician and show you are a genuine visitor.
Health insurance rules
The policy must be issued by a Canadian insurer or a foreign insurer authorized by OSFI and doing insurance business in Canada, be valid for at least 1 year from entry and for each entry, be paid in full or by instalments with a deposit (quotes are not accepted), cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation, and provide at least CAD 100,000 emergency coverage. Foreign insurers that are not authorized in this way are not accepted.

Host’s minimum income
Family size counts you and any other super visa applicants, the host, the host’s spouse or partner, their dependent children, previously approved super visa holders still covered by an invitation and people the host still sponsors. Minimum incomes (updated 29 July 2025): 1 person CAD 30,526; 2 CAD 38,002; 3 CAD 46,720; 4 CAD 56,724; 5 CAD 64,336; 6 CAD 72,560; 7 CAD 80,784. The host’s spouse or common-law partner may co-sign and combine income; siblings cannot.
Length of stay and extensions
For applications made on or after 22 June 2023, you can stay for 5 years at a time, even if the border officer does not stamp your passport. Before your status expires you must either leave or apply to extend; super visa holders can apply in Canada for 2-year extensions.
If your application is refused
IRCC sends a letter explaining the reasons, most often doubts about your ties to your home country, the purpose of travel or your funds. There is no appeal for visitor visas; you can apply again with a new fee and stronger evidence, or seek judicial review at the Federal Court in limited cases.
How to apply, step by step
- Confirm on IRCC’s site that you need a visitor visa (citizens of visa-required countries do) and create an IRCC account.
- Ask your child or grandchild for the invitation letter and income proof; buy the qualifying insurance and book the medical exam with a panel physician.
- Complete the online application, upload the checklist documents and pay CAD 100 plus CAD 85 biometrics.
- Within 30 days of the biometric instruction letter, give fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre (VAC).
- If approved, submit your passport through the VAC when asked so the visa can be placed in it.
- Travel with the visa; the border officer decides how long you may stay, normally up to 6 months.
