Brunei work visa and work pass

Employment Visa and Work Pass (Visa dan Pas Kerja)

In short

Foreigners working in Brunei must hold a valid employment visa and work pass. The employer obtains a Foreign Worker Licence and a job order from the Labour Department, a licensed employment agency representative applies to JIPK, and the approval is sent to the Brunei mission abroad, where the worker has the work visa endorsed with a medical report.

Who handles work passes

JIPK's Foreign Work Pass Division receives and processes applications for employment visas and work passes, re-entry visas for work pass holders, dependant visas and passes, cancellations and extensions of work and dependant passes. Labour matters, such as the Foreign Worker Licence (Lesen Pekerja Asing, LPA), the BUR 500 form, the licence to recruit foreign workers and the job order, are handled by the Labour Department before the immigration application.

Documents for a new application

For nationals other than Singaporeans and Malaysians, JIPK lists: an application letter from the employer or guarantor, the visa form, a copy of the worker's passport valid for at least six months, Form 23 with two recent photos, the original and a copy of the Foreign Worker Licence or BUR 500 form and the licence to recruit foreign workers from the Labour Department, the job order from the Labour Department, and the employment agency representative's card. Singapore and Malaysia nationals do not need the visa form but submit a copy of their identity card.

Approval and endorsement

The employment agency representative first submits the visa and work pass application to JIPK. JIPK issues a work visa approval letter, which is transmitted by fax to the Brunei mission abroad. The worker then attends that mission with the travel document, a medical report and the related documents to have the work visa endorsed. After arrival, the work pass endorsement for a company requires the application letter, registration form, Form 23, copies of the visa approval and LPA, the medical check (blood test and X-ray) and the passport.

  1. Your Brunei employer obtains the Labour Department licences and job order.
  2. The licensed employment agency representative files the visa and work pass application with JIPK.
  3. JIPK issues the work visa approval and faxes it to the Brunei mission abroad.
  4. Attend the mission with your passport, medical report and documents to get the work visa endorsed.
  5. After arrival, complete the work pass endorsement with a medical check in Brunei.

Renewals, employer changes and cancellations

Renewing a work pass needs an application letter, registration form, Form 23, a copy of the LPA, a fresh medical check and a passport valid for at least six months. Changing employer adds the Labour Department's change of contract form and the old passport. Cancelling a work pass requires cancellation and confirmation forms in duplicate, the cancelled visa approval, the LPA, passports, a copy of the ticket and an identity card. Domestic workers follow a separate set of forms.
