Who needs a transit visa
The TR category is for transit passengers travelling through Bangladesh to a destination outside the country, and for seamen, mariners and air crews who need to sign on or sign off a sea vessel. It allows a stay of up to 96 hours.
Crews of aircraft and ships on international routes who travel regularly use the separate C category, valid up to three years with multiple entry, with stays of one month per entry for maritime crews and 15 days for other crews.
Documents
A TR visa requires the completed form, the passport with a copy of the information page, proof of a visa for the third country and a ticket to the third country. Seamen and mariners also present their continuous discharge certificate.
Passports must be valid for at least six months. The policy does not provide for extensions of transit visas.

Fees and payment
The transit visa on arrival costs USD 20 or the equivalent in another foreign currency. A TR visa issued by a mission follows that mission's fee table, which is set by reciprocity for each nationality, and fees are not refunded if the visa is refused.
Bangladesh does not publish a list of airside transit exemptions in the Visa Policy 2026, so travellers who must pass immigration, change airports or stay overnight should plan for a transit visa or the 30-day visa on arrival.
Transit visa on arrival
The Department of Immigration and Passports issues transit visas at ports of entry. Under the mandatory conditions of the Visa Policy 2026, the authority can grant a transit visa valid up to the next connecting flight but for no more than 72 hours, charging USD 20 or the equivalent in foreign currency.
Nationals on the visa-on-arrival list travelling for tourism or business may instead receive the ordinary 30-day visa on arrival if they want to stay longer than a connection.
- Check whether your connection requires leaving the airport or staying overnight in Bangladesh.
- Make sure you hold the onward ticket and any visa for the next country.
- Apply for a TR visa at a Bangladesh mission, or request a transit visa on arrival at the port of entry.
- Pay USD 20 for the transit visa on arrival.
- Leave on your connecting flight within 72 hours (on arrival) or 96 hours (TR visa).
Overstaying a transit visa
Stays beyond the transit period are treated as illegal stays and charged BDT 1,000 per day for the first 15 days. A stay prolonged by flight cancellations, accidents or natural disasters is not considered illegal. For overstays of up to seven days, the traveller can settle the fine, service charge and visa fee at the DIP or the airport immigration through a deposit at a scheduled bank and then leave; cash is not accepted.
