Who applies for the E visa

According to the MFA, the education visa is for foreign students and religious scholars who intend to study in Iran. It names three groups: school students, students in higher education and researchers. Short academic visits by faculty members and researchers on educational and cultural programmes can also be made on the A entry visa, which works with an invitation instead.

The certificate of eligibility

The core requirement is a certificate of eligibility for non-immigrant student status. It is issued by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, the Ministry of Education or an accredited academic institution once you have been admitted. The MFA's department for scholarships and students also handles certificates that foreign students and religious students need to apply for a passport and visa, and verbal notes for scholarship holders of the Iranian government.

UNHCR Iran notes that Afghan Amayesh card holders who want to enrol at Iranian universities may be asked to give up that status for a passport with a student visa.

Application

Once the certificate exists, file the online application on the MFA e-visa portal. The form will ask for your previous education and work history, so keep your diplomas and CV at hand. Select the mission where you will collect the visa, verify your email within three days and follow the status with your tracking code; the portal expects about 10 business days unless an interview is held.

  1. Get the prerequisite for this visa ready: get admitted and obtain the certificate of eligibility for student status.
  2. Open the online non-immigrant visa application on the MFA e-visa portal, choose the visa type, your nationality and the mission where you will collect the visa.
  3. Fill in every field in English letters only, upload the photo and passport scan, then review the answers before submitting.
  4. Enter the verification code sent to your email within 3 days, then print the confirmation page and note the tracking code.
  5. Wait for the decision (the portal works with about 10 business days) and attend an interview if the mission asks for one.
  6. Collect the visa, travel and contact your institution about the residence procedure.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for an Iranian student visa?

A certificate of eligibility for student status from the Ministry of Science, the Ministry of Education or an accredited institution, plus the online visa application.

Can religious scholars use this visa?

Yes. The MFA explicitly includes religious scholars who intend to study in Iran in the E visa.

Is a visa waiver enough for a semester?

No. Waivers cover tourism for a limited period (for Turkish citizens, for example, 90 days within 180 days); study in Iran needs an E visa. Check the terms of your own waiver.
