Iran spouse visa: the marital visa for husbands of Iranian women

Marital visa (M) for foreign husbands of Iranian women

In short

Iran's M visa is for foreign men married to Iranian women and for the children of such families. If the marriage has not yet been registered in the Iranian legal system, the MFA directs applicants to the A entry visa for relatives instead. Children travelling to Iran on this visa need their father's official permission.

Who the marital visa covers

According to the MFA, the M visa is issued to foreign men married to Iranian women, and to the children of such families. The marriage must be registered in the Iranian legal system for this visa.

If the marriage has not been registered in Iran yet, the MFA advises applying for the A entry visa in its "relatives" form. The same entry visa is used by relatives of foreigners who live in Iran, and the online form also has a "Family" and a "Family visit" option.

Documents

Besides the online application, the MFA asks for the father's official permission for children's travel to Iran. In practice you should also be able to show the registered marriage, for example the Iranian marriage certificate or the registration of a foreign marriage with the Iranian authorities, and your wife's Iranian identity documents.

Where to apply

Start on the MFA e-visa portal and select the Family option and your collecting mission. Some missions treat family cases differently from tourist applications: the embassy in Berlin, which otherwise routes visas through registered agencies, accepts applications from family members of Iranians, for example foreign husbands or children of an Iranian mother, directly at its consular section. Verify your email within three days; the portal aims for about 10 business days.

  1. Get the prerequisite for this visa ready: make sure the marriage is registered in Iran; if not, apply for the entry visa for relatives.
  2. Open the online non-immigrant visa application on the MFA e-visa portal, choose the visa type, your nationality and the mission where you will collect the visa.
  3. Fill in every field in English letters only, upload the photo and passport scan, then review the answers before submitting.
  4. Enter the verification code sent to your email within 3 days, then print the confirmation page and note the tracking code.
  5. Wait for the decision (the portal works with about 10 business days) and attend an interview if the mission asks for one.
  6. Collect the visa at the mission, bringing the marriage documents and, for children, the father's permission.

Forms

Children of mixed families

UNHCR Iran notes that an Iranian mother married to a non-Iranian man can apply to pass her Iranian nationality to her children; a child who receives the Iranian identity booklet (shenasnameh) has the same rights as any Iranian national. Children who remain foreign travel on the M visa with their father's official permission.
