Ghana Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for African Union, ECOWAS and visa-waiver nationals
In short
Ghana's Electronic Travel Authorisation is a free pre-travel security clearance, not a visa, introduced with the eVisa platform in May 2026 as part of visa-free entry for African passport holders. It applies to nationals of African Union and ECOWAS states and of countries with a bilateral visa waiver whose eligibility result reads ETA Required, and it allows a stay of up to 90 days from entry. Other nationalities use the eVisa or a mission visa.

Who needs an ETA
When Ghana launched its eVisa platform in May 2026, GIS announced visa-free entry for all African passport holders, supported by the new online system. In practice the ETA applies to nationals of all African Union member states, all ECOWAS member states and countries holding a current bilateral visa waiver agreement with Ghana. The definitive list is kept by the GIS Director of Visas and Permits together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is applied through the portal's eligibility checker.
Only travellers whose result is ETA Required apply for it. If the checker returns Visa-Free, as it does for ECOWAS and AES nationals in many cases, no application is needed; if it returns eVisa Required, the traveller applies for a paid eVisa or at an embassy instead. Eligibility can also depend on passport type and government policy, so check again before each trip.
What to prepare
The ETA asks for fewer documents than a visa: a passport that remains valid for the trip, a recent colour photo on a light background, a scan of the biodata page, flight details and accommodation information that matches your travel dates. Yellow fever vaccination information is part of the form, and a valid yellow fever certificate is required at the border; travellers without it may be referred to airport health officials, including for vaccination.
Required documents
Identity
- Valid passport and a clear scan of the full biodata page
- Recent colour passport photo on a plain light background
Travel
- Flight details: departure city, airline, flight number, date and port of entry
- Accommodation information matching the travel dates
Other
- Yellow fever vaccination details and certificate
The twelve steps of the application
After the checker shows ETA Required, choose Proceed to Travel Authorization and say whether you are applying for yourself. You then enter personal details (date of birth, nationality, country of residence, email and phone), passport details (number, country of issue, issue and expiry dates) and upload a recent passport photo and a clear scan of the full biodata page. Next come the purpose of the trip, chosen from tourism, leisure, business meetings, conferences, visiting friends or relatives, official government visit, medical care, transit or other; travel details (city of departure, airline, flight number, date of travel and port of entry); accommodation; yellow fever and public health questions, including whether you have visited a country under a public health alert; security questions; and the declaration.
- Run the eligibility checker on the Ghana eVisa portal and confirm the result is ETA Required.
- Choose Proceed to Travel Authorization and enter personal and passport details exactly as in the passport.
- Upload the photo and biodata page, then add purpose, flight and accommodation details.
- Answer the yellow fever, public health and security questions and sign the declaration.
- Keep the reference number and watch your email for the outcome.
- Travel with the ETA, passport and yellow fever certificate.
After submission and at the border
You receive a reference number when you submit, and the outcome is sent to your registered email. Processing times are indicative. If more information is requested, answer promptly through the channel shown on the portal. At the border the officer can grant a stay of up to 90 days from entry. Common reasons for delay are passport data that does not match the passport, a photo that breaks the rules, a cropped biodata page, incomplete flight details and missing yellow fever information.

Frequently asked questions
Does every African passport holder get an ETA?
GIS answers yes in its eVisa guide: African passport holders are routed to the ETA, unless the checker shows they are visa-free.
Is there a fee for the ETA?
No. The ETA is free of charge.
Can non-African nationals use the ETA?
Only if their country holds a current bilateral visa waiver agreement with Ghana and the eligibility checker returns ETA Required. Other non-African travellers use the eVisa or a visa from a Ghana mission.
How long can I stay with an ETA?
Up to 90 days from the date of entry. Longer stays need an extension or a residence permit from GIS.
