Who qualifies
Scientific research here means the work of a scientist, academic or visiting professor at a public or other research institution that appears in the Ministry of Education’s register of organisations authorised to host researchers from third countries. The institution signs a hosting agreement with you and, unless it is already in that agreement, undertakes to cover public costs of your stay and departure arising within six months after the agreement ends.
Rules for all long-term documents
Supporting documents must be in Czech or come with an official Czech translation; untranslated papers are treated as not submitted, and the missions do not translate them. Foreign public documents need an apostille, documents may not be older than 180 days (passport, civil status records and diplomas excepted), and the passport and the main purpose document are shown in original.

Application route
Czechia issues residence permits, not long-term visas, for research. You lodge the green form at the mission, the Ministry of the Interior decides, and the mission then issues a 60-day visa so you can travel and collect the residence card at the Ministry office for your place of stay.
Researchers recruited by research organisations can also be put forward under the government Key and Research Staff Programme run by CzechInvest, which guarantees a mission appointment and a decision within 30 days.
- Agree the research stay with a registered Czech research organisation and sign the hosting agreement.
- Ask whether the institution will nominate you for the Key and Research Staff Programme; otherwise register for an appointment with the Czech mission responsible for your place of residence.
- Prepare the documents in Czech, with apostilles where needed.
- Lodge the green form in person, give fingerprints and pay the fee.
- Collect the 60-day visa with insurance, travel, report your address and pick up the residence card at the Ministry of the Interior office.

Insurance and registration after arrival
When collecting the visa you show travel medical insurance for the stay in Czech translation. For long-term stays it must cover comprehensive care, including preventive care and pregnancy, with at least EUR 400,000 and no co-payment. In Czechia you report your address within three working days of arrival; residence permit holders also give biometrics at the Ministry of the Interior office for their card.
Mobility within the EU
Researchers holding a research residence permit from another EU state can carry out research in Czechia for up to one year on that permit, without a further visa, if the card states scientific research. Short research trips of up to 90 days use a Schengen visa, for which researchers travelling for research are exempt from the fee.
Refusal and appeal
If a long-term visa or residence permit is refused, the appeal is sent directly to the Ministry of the Interior, Department for Asylum and Migration Policy, not through the consulate. The deadline and form are stated in the decision.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether my Czech host may sign a hosting agreement?
It must be listed in the Ministry of Education register of research organisations authorised to accept researchers from third countries; ask the institution for its registration.
Is a PhD student a researcher or a student?
That depends on the basis of the stay: enrolment in a doctoral programme leads to the study permit, while employment or hosting at a research organisation under a hosting agreement leads to the research permit.
What can I do after the research ends?
Researchers who complete their research in Czechia can apply for the nine-month residence permit for seeking employment or starting a business before the current permit expires.
