Long-term residence permit for seeking employment or starting a business (graduates and researchers)

In short

Czechia's job-search permit is a follow-up permit for people already in the country who have completed an accredited university programme or a research project there. It is issued for up to nine months, cannot be extended, costs CZK 2,500, is decided within 60 days and gives free access to the labour market; official pages list no job-search visa for applicants abroad.

Who can apply

Two groups qualify: holders of a long-term residence permit for study who have completed an accredited university programme in Czechia, and holders of a residence permit for scientific research who have completed their research. The application is lodged while the current study or research permit is still valid. People who studied elsewhere in the EU, or who came to Czechia on other permit types, are not covered by this route.

Documents

The Ministry of the Interior asks for the application form, a valid passport, a photo, proof of accommodation, proof of funds and comprehensive health insurance. Graduates add the document certifying completion of university studies, and researchers proof that the project has ended. A criminal record certificate is needed from each country where you lived for six months or more in the last three years, which often includes your home country.

Funds are tied to the existential minimum set by Czech law, so the sum depends on the length of stay. Insurance must be comprehensive, not travel cover.

Where and how to apply

You apply in person at a Ministry of the Interior office (Department for Asylum and Migration Policy) in Czechia, before your current permit expires, and pay the CZK 2,500 administrative fee. The legal decision period is 60 days. You can follow the file online at frs.gov.cz with the procedure number.

  1. Finish your degree or research while your study or research permit is still valid.
  2. Collect accommodation proof, funds, comprehensive insurance and criminal records.
  3. Apply in person at a Ministry of the Interior office before the current permit expires and pay CZK 2,500.
  4. Track the procedure at frs.gov.cz and attend any appointment for biometrics or collection.
  5. Within the nine months, find a job or set up a business and apply for the matching permit.

After nine months

The permit cannot be extended. Before it ends you switch to an employee card, an EU Blue Card or a residence permit for business, depending on what you found. If nothing is in place by the expiry date, you need another valid basis of stay or must leave.

What the permit allows

Holders may take any job, run a business, keep looking for work or prepare a start-up without a separate work permit. Graduates of Czech universities keep free access to the labour market even after they switch to another permit. Like other Czech long-term residence permits, it lets you travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180 days for non-work purposes.

Holders can later apply for a long-term residence permit for business without meeting the usual condition linked to that change of purpose.
