Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) for Turkish citizens

In short

This page covers only the arrangement for citizens of Türkiye, one of the partner countries of Australia's Work and Holiday program; other nationalities use the Working Holiday (417) or Work and Holiday (462) visa under their own country's conditions. Turkish citizens aged 18 to 30 with a tertiary qualification or 2 years of university study, functional English, a letter of support from Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and about AUD 5,000 can get a 12-month visa to holiday and work. The first visa costs AUD 840 and is capped at 100 a year.

Who this applies to: Turkish citizens

These conditions apply only to holders of a Turkish passport. Australia's Working Holiday Maker program has two visas, the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) and the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), each open to passport holders of specific partner countries with their own age limits, education rules and caps; Home Affairs lists them country by country. Turkish applicants must be 18 to 30 years old inclusive when they apply (the application must be lodged before the 31st birthday), apply from outside Australia, not be accompanied by dependent children, and never have entered Australia on a subclass 462 or 417 visa before. Each applicant applies alone.

For Türkiye the education requirement is a tertiary qualification from a university, college or training centre, or at least 2 completed years of undergraduate university study. Degrees, graduate certificates and diplomas count; Certificates I to IV and a senior secondary certificate do not.

You need at least functional English, normally shown with an approved test taken in the 12 months before applying. You must also meet the health and character requirements.

Letter of support from Türkiye

Applicants from Türkiye must obtain a letter of support from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs before lodging the visa application and attach it. Home Affairs lists Türkiye among the countries whose applicants need a government letter. Contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its current procedure for issuing these letters.

Funds and the annual cap

You must show enough money to support yourself and to leave Australia, usually about AUD 5,000 plus the cost of a departure ticket, or show that you already hold one. Missing funds evidence can delay processing.

Each program year Australia caps the number of first Work and Holiday visas for Türkiye at 100. Applications for capped countries open on 2 July; a cap can be paused or closed once demand reaches the limit, and a closed cap does not reopen until the next program year. Second and third visas are not capped.

Working and studying in Australia

You can do any kind of work, but usually for no more than 6 months with the same employer, and study for up to 4 months. You pay tax on your earnings, and your employer pays superannuation, which you can claim when you leave Australia. Home Affairs strongly recommends health insurance because you are liable for medical costs.

Second and third years

Türkiye is also eligible for the second and third Work and Holiday visas. After 3 months of specified subclass 462 work during the first visa you can apply for a second visa, and 6 months of specified work during the second visa opens a third. The age limit of 30 still applies when applying.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check in early July that the Türkiye cap is open on the Home Affairs 'status of country caps' page.
  2. Obtain the letter of support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye.
  3. Sit an approved English test and prepare translated diploma and transcript.
  4. Apply online from outside Australia for the first Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) and attach all documents.
  5. Pay the AUD 840 charge and give biometrics or health checks if asked.
  6. Stay outside Australia until the visa is granted; do not book flights or commitments before the grant.
