When the sponsored stream makes sense
This stream suits visitors whose relative in Australia is willing to take formal responsibility for the visit. Home Affairs itself notes that the ordinary Tourist stream also allows family visits without a sponsor, gives more flexibility on entries and lets the host simply write an invitation letter. The sponsored version is therefore mainly used where a sponsor's undertaking and, if requested, a bond strengthen the case.
Requirements for the visitor and the sponsor
The applicant must have an eligible sponsor, intend a genuine temporary visit, have access to enough money, and meet the health and character requirements. The sponsor is usually a relative who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen; you prove the relationship with documents such as birth or marriage certificates.
The sponsor accepts obligations, including that the visitor will comply with the visa conditions and leave on time. Home Affairs may require the sponsor to pay a security bond, which is returned if the conditions are respected.
How to apply
The sponsor's details and evidence are part of the application, which is lodged online in ImmiAccount from outside Australia. Attach identity documents, evidence of the relationship with your sponsor, evidence of funds and of your ties at home, all with English translations. Biometrics and health examinations may be requested after lodgement.
- Agree with your relative in Australia that they will act as sponsor and collect their status and relationship documents.
- Log in to ImmiAccount from outside Australia and select Visitor visa (subclass 600), Sponsored Family stream.
- Complete the form with the sponsor's details and upload your documents with English translations.
- Pay the AUD 250 charge per applicant.
- Provide biometrics or health checks if asked; the sponsor pays a security bond if the department requests one.
- Travel only after the written grant and leave Australia before the visa ends.
Conditions during the stay
The visa will carry condition 8503 'No Further Stay', which means you cannot apply for most other visas while in Australia unless the condition is waived. Because it is generally single entry, leaving Australia ends your right to return on it. Work is not permitted.

Frequently asked questions
Is the sponsored stream better than the tourist stream for visiting family?
Not necessarily. Home Affairs suggests checking the Tourist stream first, which needs no sponsor and can be multiple entry; the sponsored stream is single entry in most cases and carries No Further Stay.
How much is the security bond?
The department decides whether a bond is needed and its amount case by case, and tells the sponsor if one is required.
Can I extend a sponsored family visa in Australia?
No. The visa cannot be extended and condition 8503 blocks most new applications in Australia unless waived.
Can my parents get a longer visitor visa?
Parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents can ask for a longer Tourist stream visa, or consider the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa 870 for stays of 3 or 5 years.
