Permitted business activities
Business visitors may make general business or employment enquiries, investigate, negotiate, enter into or review a contract, take part in activities of an official government visit, and attend a conference, trade fair or seminar provided the organisers do not pay them to participate.
If the trip involves doing work, even short-term, the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 400) or a work visa is the correct route. Selling goods or services directly to the general public is also outside this stream.
Eligibility
You must be a genuine visitor travelling for business visitor activities, be outside Australia when you apply and when the decision is made, have enough money to support yourself, and meet the health and character requirements. A letter from your employer or the Australian host describing the purpose and dates of the visit supports this.
Application and decision
Applications are made online in ImmiAccount. Upload your passport, the business letters, evidence of funds and translations, then pay the charge. The visa is linked to your passport electronically and the grant letter states the stay period and entry type. It cannot be extended in Australia; another visa is needed to stay longer, unless a No Further Stay condition prevents that.
- Confirm that your activities fit the business visitor list and do not involve work for an Australian organisation.
- Collect the employer letter, invitation and funds evidence, and have them translated into English.
- Apply in ImmiAccount for Visitor visa (subclass 600), Business Visitor stream, and upload the documents.
- Pay AUD 250 and give biometrics at an Australian Biometric Collection Centre if asked.
- Travel after the grant and keep within the stay period on the grant letter.
Common problems
Applications are decided on what you upload, and the department may not ask for more. A vague purpose, activities that amount to work, or missing evidence of the business relationship are typical weaknesses. A refusal letter explains the reasons and any review rights.

Frequently asked questions
Can I be paid as a speaker at an Australian conference on this visa?
No. You can attend and take part, but the organisers cannot pay you to participate. Paid activities need a different visa such as the Temporary Activity visa 400.
How long can a business visitor stay?
Up to 3 months, as set out in the grant letter.
Can I install equipment my company sold to an Australian client?
Hands-on work like installation is not a business visitor activity; check the Temporary Activity visa (subclass 400) for short specialised work.
Can my spouse come with me on the same application?
No. Each person needs a separate application; a spouse who is not travelling for business would normally apply in the Tourist stream.
