Italy: visa decisions in India
| Year | Applications | Visas issued | Refused | Refusal rate | Multiple-entry share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 52,332 | 44,833 | 7,445 | 14.2% | 74.1% |
| 2024 | 60,365 | 53,539 | 6,809 | 11.3% | 83.8% |
| 2025 | 53,423 | 46,613 | 6,810 | 12.7% | 89.2% |
In 2025, Italy’s embassy and consulates in India (Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata) received 53,423 applications for short-stay Schengen visas and issued 46,613. 12.7% of applications were refused. In 2024 the rate was much the same, 11.3%. Applications fell by 12% compared with 2024 (60,365).
For comparison, all Schengen states together refused 15.8% of the applications lodged in India that year, from 7.1% at the consulates of Denmark to 46.5% at those of Slovenia. Italy’s consulates worldwide refused 10.8%. Italy was the 6th most applied-for Schengen state in India.
You apply to the Schengen state that is your main destination (the longest stay or the main purpose; the state of first entry only when there is none), so a lower rate elsewhere is no reason to apply there. The figures cover applications lodged in India, by any nationality: mostly citizens, but also residents from other countries.
